The second chapter of this West Vancouver home carries the same heart and intention as the first.

In Part I, we shared how the main floor and basement evolved into a modern coastal retreat for an active family of five and their two golden retrievers. We transformed the living spaces into ones that support busy days on the water, in the mountains, and on the court, while offering a soft place to land. With those spaces complete, it was time to move upstairs.

Project Scope

The second floor held incredible potential, yet the layout no longer reflected how the family lived. Originally designed with four bedrooms, it had served them well when all three boys were at home. As their eldest moved away for university, the opportunity arose to rethink this level entirely.

Our goal was to transform the primary suite, boys’ bedrooms, and shared bathroom into spaces that felt more functional, more spacious, and fully aligned with the calm, coastal aesthetic established downstairs.

These next rooms, each deeply personal, continue that story.

Light-Filled Stairway & Hallway

The journey upstairs begins with a space that often goes unnoticed: the stairway and upper hallway. Here, our intention was to create a sense of quiet continuity between the public spaces below and the private realm above.

Warm oak, soft whites, and abundant natural light set a serene tone. Shiplap detailing—now a subtle architectural thread throughout the home—continues onto the ceiling, drawing the eye upward and enhancing the feeling of height. A sculptural wood chandelier by Propellor Studio anchors the double-height entry, while a vibrant landscape painting adds a welcome hit of colour and personality.

This simple passageway becomes an experience of arrival, a reminder that even transitional spaces can feel considered and calm.

Textural & Bold Boys’ Bedrooms

Designing bedrooms for two nearly grown sons meant balancing longevity with personality. Each room needed to reflect its occupant while remaining cohesive with the home’s modern coastal aesthetic.

In one bedroom, a warm wood slat feature wall introduces vertical texture and a grounded, modern feel. Layered neutrals keep the space adaptable as tastes evolve. In another, a deep navy accent wall with geometric panelling brings boldness and structure. Textural bedding and understated accessories soften the edges, creating a space that feels both youthful and sophisticated.

Though distinct, each room offers clean lines, comfortable furnishings, and a sense of ease that supports study, sleep, and everything in between.

Shared Bathroom Designed for Real Life

With multiple boys sharing one bathroom, functionality was non-negotiable. By reclaiming square footage from the unused fourth bedroom, we created a more generous layout with improved storage and better flow.

Fresh finishes, abundant storage, and durable surfaces make this bathroom bright, streamlined, and easy to maintain – exactly what this stage of life requires. The updated palette ties back to the home’s coastal aesthetic, giving the room a clean, modern feel that will grow with the boys for years to come.

Primary Bedroom: A Serene Coastal Escape

For Robert and Elizabeth, the primary bedroom needed to offer a true sense of retreat. Their days are full, their home is lively, and they longed for a space that felt peaceful and restorative.

A palette of layered greys, soft whites, and pale wood tones sets a calming foundation. The wallpaper behind the bed introduces gentle, cloud-like movement that echoes the treetop views beyond the windows. The shiplap ceiling adds subtle architecture without overwhelming the room, helping the space feel airy and beautifully grounded.

One of the most beloved features is the three-sided fireplace, thoughtfully positioned so its glow can be enjoyed the moment you enter, from the comfort of the bed, or from a cozy chair tucked in the corner (often shared with their adorable golden retrievers).

With large windows and French doors opening to the surrounding trees, the connection to nature remains constant. The result is serene and effortless, a room that embraces rest while supporting the quieter moments of everyday life.

Primary Ensuite: Soft Coastal Luxury

The ensuite was a key driver for this renovation. The original layout felt tight and underwhelming, especially for a couple who dreamed of a tranquil space. With the reconfiguration, we were able to significantly increase the room’s size and improve its functionality. 

A custom double vanity in soft wood tones anchor the room with generous storage and clean, modern lines. Framed mirrors reflect the natural light beautifully, while brushed nickel hardware introduces a refined coastal elegance.

A freestanding tub sits beneath a generous skylight, allowing natural light to cascade into the room throughout the day. Shiplap panelling and delicately textured wallpaper create a layered backdrop—fresh, timeless, and quietly sophisticated.

Custom drapery frames the window with a floral pattern that softens the vertical lines of the shiplap and introduces a hint of movement. The sculptural chandelier overhead, with its cluster of delicate glass orbs, adds a moment of artistry yet keeps the space serene.

This room is one of my favourites in the entire home. The combination of layered neutrals, subtle textures, handcrafted details, and thoughtful lighting creates a feeling of refined tranquillity. It is a space designed to support a spa-like start and end to each day – calm, cohesive, and deeply livable.

A Walk-In Closet Designed for Everyday Ease

Previously, the primary closet was so small and awkward that Robert stored his clothing in a separate bedroom. Gaining back square footage from the unused fourth bedroom allowed us to completely reimagine this space.

Now, the walk-in closet enjoys its own window, flooding the room with natural light. Custom millwork provides dedicated zones for each of them, with hanging space, drawers, and open storage designed around their everyday routines.

It feels ordered, calm, and intuitive – a small but meaningful shift that makes mornings smoother and adds a touch of everyday luxury to their lives.

In Part I, we shared how the transformation of this 1950s-era home reflected James and Margaret’s East Coast roots and West Coast experiences—honouring both tradition and simplicity. While the main floor introduced this coast-to-coast conversation, the upstairs and private areas allowed us to go deeper, building in warmth, function, and meaning at every turn.

These next spaces—each distinct in purpose—continue that narrative, illustrating how a home should feel both cohesive and collected, practical and polished.

Organized Mudroom & Laundry Area

Not to be overlooked, the mudroom and adjoining laundry are hard-working spaces within the home. From the start, we aimed to bring the same level of intention here as we did in the more prominent rooms.

Custom cabinetry in a muted sage finish provides ample storage while tying into the green tones carried throughout the main floor. Built-in seating and open shelving add function and flexibility, while the Roman shade above the bench brings a cheerful layer of colour and pattern.

Around the corner, the laundry area is equally efficient—outfitted with durable surfaces, integrated storage, and clean lines that support everyday ease.

Polished & Personal Home Office

A well-designed home office should offer more than utility—it should invite focus and a sense of calm. In this space, we prioritised all of the above, creating a tailored environment that supports the clients’ day-to-day work while still feeling connected to the rest of the home.

We started with custom built-ins in white oak that flow effortlessly with the new hardwood floors. Open shelving creates room for meaningful objects and collected pieces, while the lower cabinetry keeps everything tidy and contained. Brass picture lights illuminate the colourful artwork and elevate the millwork with a refined, gallery-like effect.

A beautiful white oak desk anchors the room, paired with a woven cane-back chair for a textural moment. Overhead, a bubble pendant light infuses a sense of levity and softness. Finished with contrasting black decorative objects, this office feels both personal and professional—a serene, creative corner designed for clarity and focus.

Two Bathrooms, Two Ways

Bathrooms often offer an opportunity to explore a different side of the home’s character, and these two spaces are no exception.

In the main-level powder room, whimsical floral wallpaper introduces a playful, feminine energy. A fluted wood vanity and brass fixtures root the design in classic craftsmanship, while crisp shiplap keeps the aesthetic feeling fresh.

Upstairs, the guest bath takes a bolder approach…

Here in the main bathroom—primarily used by James and Margaret’s son—geometric wallpaper and black shiplap make a confident statement. Matte black fixtures and a natural oak vanity complete the space, lending to an overall effect that is grounded and masculine—a bold counterpoint to the home’s softer moments.

Relaxed & Collected Primary Suite

Last but certainly not least: the space that started it all.

James and Margaret initially reached out to address a leaking shower in their ensuite, but that small issue became the catalyst for a complete reimagining of the upper level.

By combining two bedrooms overlooking the garden, we created a light-filled, connected retreat—with the option to revert to separate rooms in the future.

A double-sided fireplace—chosen to showcase James’s work in the fireplace industry—anchors the suite and gently divides the sleeping area from the adjoining sitting room. With subtle moulding and a clean profile, this architectural feature embodies East Coast tradition while honouring West Coast simplicity.

Custom built-ins in the sitting area, painted in a muted green, provide both storage and styling opportunities. A pair of velvet lounge chairs in a complementing hue form a quiet nook for reading or reflection. The nature-inspired palette, which picks up on the wood tones and colour story seen in the butler’s pantry, living room, and mudroom, continues to reinforce the home’s visual harmony.

With the new footprint, we had the freedom to design a spa-like ensuite that blends timeless appeal with daily livability. 

A spacious walk-in shower, freestanding soaking tub, and custom double vanity now define the room. Herringbone wood-look tile flooring creates movement underfoot, meanwhile, classic white cabinetry and oak-framed mirrors strike a balance between crisp and cozy.

Above the freestanding tub, a bubble-inspired pendant—nearly identical to the one in the home office—adds a touch of artistry. Its multi-tiered, glass-blown shape diffuses light beautifully, offering a soft moment of artistry in a room that favours clean lines and understated elegance.

The wallpaper, delicate in both tone and pattern, adds just enough texture to elevate the space without overwhelming it—reinforcing the suite’s sense of quiet luxury. Together, these thoughtful details achieve everything our clients’ envisioned and more.

Final Thoughts

From a leaky shower to a full-scale transformation, this renovation uncovered the hidden potential of a well-loved home. Throughout every decision, our aim was to blend East Coast charm with West Coast clarity, delivering a space that feels not just beautiful but deeply livable.

When James and Margaret (names changed) approached us about updating their 1950s-era Newfoundland home, their goal was clear: modernize their interiors while honouring both their experience of the West Coast in Vancouver and their current life on the East Coast.

Having recently completed our PEI project, I was uniquely positioned to help them bridge these two aesthetics. My shared understanding and experience of living on both coasts—coupled with a family connection (fun fact: my mother-in-law, a St. John’s-based designer, had worked on the original renovation of this home over 20 years ago)—made this project particularly meaningful.

Project Scope

What started as a straightforward repair—a leaking shower in the primary ensuite—quickly led to a broader reconfiguration of the second floor. From there, the project expanded into a full cosmetic renovation completed in two phases.

Phase 1 focused on the upper level, reworking the layout and fully furnishing the primary suite. In Phase 2, we turned our attention to the main floor, where we updated finishes, added extensive millwork, and reworked key spaces to better accommodate James and Margaret’s needs.

Although we typically take a more hands-on approach, working remotely and completing the project in phases required a more intentional strategy. With each decision, we remained focused on creating a home that felt cohesive, comfortable, and true to our clients’ vision.

Today, we begin the first of our two-part series unveiling the transformation.

Traditional East Coast Entryway

Upon entering the front door, you are met with a defined vestibule—a classic East Coast feature designed to buffer the rest of the home from Newfoundland’s often fierce winds and wet weather. This traditional element offers both function and form, creating a clear sense of arrival while helping to contain the elements.

Marble mosaic tile underfoot provides durability for snow-and rain-covered boots, while also adding richness and pattern. Overhead, a globe pendant casts a soft glow, and a vintage-inspired floral wallpaper brings a welcoming layer of charm that nods to tradition without feeling overly formal.

The white oak console table is the home’s first styled moment, setting a tone that feels thoughtful, warm, and refined. A rich rust coloured bench tucked beneath adds a layer of softness and practicality.

Incorporating James and Margaret’s art collection was central to the design of the entire home. Some pieces we used as a jumping-off point for colour and finish selections, while others were new additions—like a few West Coast artists I introduced that now round out their collection. The earthy hues in the winter landscape painting above the entry table sets the tone for what is to come.

Contemporary and Tailored Dining Room

This formal dining area reflects classic East Coast sensibilities, yet its furnishings lean into West Coast simplicity.

A mix of black and brass strikes a refined yet approachable tone. The oversized table—perfect for entertaining—rests under a circular, satin brass chandelier, while floor-length tailored grey drapery with patterned trim brings a touch of softness and sophistication.

With its dark finish, the dining table creates striking contrast against the light oak floors. Its delicate grain adds texture, while the curved arched base introduces a memorable architectural silhouette. Surrounding the table, leather-upholstered dining chairs in a neutral beige tone infuse softness and comfort. Their gentle curves and sleek aesthetic blend timeless elegance with contemporary ease.

The most noteworthy feature? A snowy forest landscape painting, part of James and Margaret’s art collection. This evocative piece, with its gold-flecked detailing, evokes the glow of a winter sunset. Its subtle hues of orange echo the tones from the nearby entryway creating a sense of harmony between spaces.

As you move through to the kitchen, the mood begins to shift…

Painted in a mossy green and accented with copper fixtures, this small but mighty space radiates comfort and charm. Above, a tiled ceiling mimics the look of a traditional tin ceiling, drawing the eye upward and adding both dimension and nostalgia.

Equipped with a second sink and built-in wine fridge, this nook is as functional as it is beautiful—well-suited for both everyday use and entertaining.

Pristine and Organic Kitchen & Breakfast Nook

The kitchen embraces the streamlined West Coast aesthetic Margaret came to appreciate during her residency in Vancouver—natural materials, balanced contrast, and a strong connection between form and function. A generously sized walnut island anchors the space, its natural tone echoed in the wood trim of the custom vent hood.

White cabinetry serves as a clean backdrop, complemented by striking quartzite, which extends uninterrupted behind the range for a sleek, slab-like effect. We utilized decorative items to layer personality—ceramic vessels, wood boards, copper accents—and infuse the space with lived-in character.

Copper pendant lights above the island add a touch of industrial edge, their soft patina evolving beautifully over time. We sourced counter stools with woven seagrass backs and brass footrests to layer in texture in a way that feels both timeless and fresh. Together, these elements create a grounded yet inviting feeling—one that encourages gathering, conversation, and everyday ease.

Looking closer, you will notice the fluted walnut paneling under the island—an organic, tactile detail that pairs beautifully with the quartzite countertops. As I am sure you will notice, this interplay of warmth and refinement is a recurring theme we carried throughout the entire home.

Nestled in the corner of the kitchen, the breakfast nook feels like a deep exhale—casual and sunlit. Here, the West Coast influence becomes more evident…

A pedestal table with a slatted wood base provides a contemporary note, softened by upholstered chairs in a basket-weave fabric. Above, a woven seagrass pendant evokes a familiar coastal feeling—light, textural, and relaxed. This cozy nook is not only a calm spot for morning coffee or casual meals, but also maintains the perfect balance of style and comfort.

Comfortable Open-Concept Family Room

Beyond the kitchen, the family room continues the home’s warm, connected flow. Open-concept by design, this area allows easy movement and conversation between spaces.

Gentle vaulted ceilings contribute to the room’s open, inviting atmosphere, and we sourced furnishings that follow suit. Neutral sofas with clean silhouettes and a classic chandelier introduce simplicity. In contrast, walnut furnishings draw warmth from the kitchen and breakfast nook, reinforcing the home’s visual flow.

Olive green throw pillows, a textured wool area rug, and layered neutral upholstery add dimension, softening the space while maximizing comfort. In the corner, a deep lounge chair and ottoman offer a peaceful perch near the fire. Speaking of…

The Town and Country fireplace, hand-selected by James (a fireplace aficionado), is undoubtedly the focal point of the room. Framed in sculptural composite concrete, it creates a sense of permanence and artistry. It also serves a greater purpose—acting as the architectural heart of the main level. Visually calm and deeply livable, this is a space designed to be enjoyed everyday.

Classic & Contemplative Music Room

Last but not least, the music room—modest in size, but grand in presence.

The grand piano—sleek, striking, and reflective—makes an immediate impression, anchoring the room with poise. A neutral curved chaise lounge invites pause, and the addition of moody coastal artwork and filtered natural light reinforces the room’s tranquil, contemplative mood.

Herringbone patterned hardwood flooring lends movement and an additional layer of craftsmanship. A minimalist pendant light hangs overhead and introduces a touch of modernity.

Floral linen drapes soften the space, and custom wall mouldings frame the room with understated detail. Set apart but still fully connected, this is a space for rhythm, reflection, and retreat.

This traditional Dollarton home belongs to James and Lauren (names changed), an active semi-retired couple with three adult children. They have spent years building a life filled with adventure. The couple shares a passion for exploring the world, cherishing family moments, and hosting gatherings. 

In their initial consultation, they expressed a desire to renovate the entire main floor of their home. Upon visiting, we could see exactly what they meant. Like many original homes in North Vancouver, the interior exhibited signs of its age:

Before: Dollarton Traditional Home

We encountered a dimly lit kitchen with laminate countertops, worn tile flooring and carpet throughout their living spaces, and heavy oak elements in every room. Fortunately, the size and layout of the rooms were functional. They just required a substantial facelift.

As we delved deeper into the project and defined the investment their goals would require, Lauren and James made the decision to divide it into two phases. This is a common and effective approach for more extensive projects, enabling our clients to maximize their resources.

In Phase 1, our focus centred on the everyday spaces where the couple spends the majority of their time. We preserved the existing kitchen layout and implemented several strategic design updates to fit their current lifestyle. Phase 2 encompassed a more comprehensive strategy, addressing the flooring, painting, and decorating.

Now, their newly transformed home fits modern-day living while mirroring their most cherished values.

After: Classic & Pristine Kitchen

Classic, pristine, and functional, this kitchen transformation is striking, isn’t it? Our approach began with the installation of crisp, transitional-style cabinetry that kiss the ceiling, making the space feel taller. Complemented by warm, brushed brass hardware, this combination lends a timeless charm to the space.

Undoubtedly, the focal point is the laser-cut backsplash, a beautiful masterpiece locally crafted by Edgewater Studio. It showcases a laurel leaf pattern, drawing inspiration from the lush garden views visible just beyond James and Lauren’s kitchen window. This artful feature pairs beautifully with the quartz countertops, which exude a stunning marble-like elegance through subtle grey veining.

The centerpiece of the kitchen, the island, serves primarily as a practical workspace dedicated to meal preparation and serving. We intentionally did not incorporate seating or a sink, aligning with Lauren’s vision for an efficient, culinary-only zone. Adjacent to the kitchen lies a generous eat-in area…

This newly created area features an oval table in ash, finished in driftwood grey and complete with a freestanding bench thoughtfully designed with James and Lauren’s future grandchildren in mind. (They are eagerly awaiting!)

While the kitchen embraces Lauren’s preference for a predominately white colour palette, we infused subtle yet captivating blue accents. These pops of colour came to life through the custom Roman shades, upholstery on the dining chairs, and countertop storage vessels. Our design also elongated the kitchen’s overall footprint, creating more space and cohesively leading into the family room.

Comfortable & Bright Family Room

Their family room underwent a transformation in the best of ways. (Do you remember what it used to look like?) Now, it is a seamless extension of the bright and airy aesthetic of the kitchen. Subtle pops of soothing blue continue throughout providing an overall sense of comfort.

To enhance their seating arrangements, we sourced custom neutral-toned furnishings, including a sofa and two armchairs. Additionally, we designed custom patterned ottomans that can be neatly tucked under the coffee table, providing extra seating options as needed. A Frame TV, disguised among the stunning local artwork on display, adds both functionality and aesthetic appeal, making this space ideal for casual or holiday entertaining.

Their fireplace surround underwent a substantial makeover as well, with sleek blue-grey tiles that offer visual texture and effortlessly bring the colour palette of the room together. We also replaced the heavy oak mantle with a simple white one to lighten the space. The result is a warm yet airy lounging space perfect for James and Lauren’s cherished family moments.

Personal & Inspiring Living Room

In phase 2, undertaken a few years later, our focus shifted to the more formal gathering spaces. In the living room, we kept their layout the same but updated the space with quality custom furnishings. Given the soaring drywall surfaces, we opted for a soft grey wall colour to simplify the complex architectural lines. The result? A clean and refined aesthetic.

Before, this room was fairly dark. Now, it benefits from abundant natural light which reflects off the soft grey sofa and two light, houndstooth-patterned accent chairs. Above their fireplace, we added decorative mouldings that extend to the ceiling, establishing a captivating focal point for the room. To infuse a touch of sophistication and warmth, a curved brass mirror graces the space above. 

Finally, an heirloom glass cabinet displays collected and meaningful accessories that reflect the couple’s character and make this space feel inspiring, inviting, and personal.

Timeless & Meaningful Dining Room

Last but not least, we gave James and Lauren’s dining room a fresh, up-t0-date ambiance. To bring warmth and character into the room, we paired an antique table (with extendable leaves) with transitional, upholstered grey dining chairs. Above the table, a classic brass chandelier casts a timeless and inviting glow.

Meanwhile, subtle decorative wall panelling creates depth and interest on the far wall, while warm, brass curtain rods tie the design together and remain consistent with the home’s aesthetic. To infuse a hint of whimsy and connection to their beautiful outdoor view, we selected soft drapes with a nature-inspired motif and a vibrant painting by local artist Krista Johnson.

Throughout this project, our goal was to seamlessly incorporate the family’s cherished heirloom furniture with a fresh aesthetic, infusing each space with a meaningful yet contemporary atmosphere. The antique table and heirloom sideboard, rich with sentimental value, effortlessly balance the well-loved with the excitingly new. 

Final Thoughts

This transformation for our travel-loving clients stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful design, where functionality converges with elegance and sentimentality blends with modernity. We’re grateful for the trust, open communication, and the opportunity to bring James and Lauren’s vision to life.

The second chapter of our PEI renovation story is as full of adventure as our first. In Part I, we shared the tale of Erin and Andrew’s serendipitous journey, from watching this Cape Cod-style home being built on the North Shore to their spur-of-the-moment purchase of the property decades later. 

We then walked through the “social” spaces in their home, including their new living room, kitchen, butler’s pantry, dining room, home bar, and music room. Each is nature-inspired and blends Andrew’s West Coast modern style and Erin’s love for East Coast traditionalism. (If you missed it, I recommend you start with Part 1 here.)

Today’s story starts, not at the beginning of their project, but at the end. After renovating their home and installing their furnishings, naturally, our final step was to photograph this wonderful project. However, the lingering global events of 2021-2022 foiled our first attempt. We rescheduled several months later, assuming it would be safe. Then, mere days before our scheduled arrival… 

A hurricane beat us to it. 

We landed in the hurricane’s aftermath, finding closed roads, boarded up businesses, and no power. Fortunately, Erin and Andrew had a generator and graciously invited us to stay in their home as guests.

Not only did we have the rare privilege to enjoy the amenities of a home we designed, but the lack of open businesses meant getting creative with styling. Instead of visiting the local florist, we clipped florals and foliage from their property and used food fresh from their garden as props! It was a wild, heartwarming, and comical experience, to say the least.

Thanks to some innovation, flexibility, and this couple’s sheer generosity, everything turned out wonderfully — and now, we finally get to share it with you. Without further ado, let us tour the second half of their beautiful home, the more secluded and private areas…

Principal Bedroom & Closet

Like the social spaces in Erin and Andrew’s home, their new bedroom is not in the same location where it started. As it was originally located down the hall off the kitchen, which did not afford them the privacy they wanted, so a new principal suite was added as a second storey above the guest wing. This move opened up panoramic views as well as more space and privacy, especially with long-term guests staying on the first floor below.

Their new bedroom is expansive, giving us the freedom to create a separate lounge area, an idyllic place to relax with their morning coffee, read a book, converse, or enjoy other quiet activities throughout the day. The angle of the chairs, table, and ottoman (sourced from Once a Tree Furniture) highlight views of the Cavendish Dunes, while also being accessible to their three-sided fireplace in the winter.

Stepping past the fireplace, we enter the main part of Erin and Andrew’s bedroom. At first glance, this space might appear soft and simple… but appearances can be deceiving. This bedroom is a work of art in custom-designed elements. 

To start, architect Aaron Stavert of Open Practice Architecture designed this inset headboard, floating end tables, and bed frame in beautiful warm oak. To soften the ultra-modern feel of the space, we layered the space with plush textiles: the ottomans, bedding, pillows, and this custom, velvety-soft rug cut to fit snugly around the bed frame. Last but not least, unique sconces and a helicopter-style pendant from Fullhouse Modern throw some curves into the mix.

Their principal closet is no less spectacular, though leans slightly more traditional, for Erin. Here you’ll find a mix of Shaker-style cabinetry, from pull-out drawers to tall cabinets to open shelves that display Andrew’s impressive sneaker collection. The palette reflects the same neutral, soothing tones as the bedroom, with pops of colour evoked through art, Andrew’s sneakers, and a nature-printed window valance.

Principal Bathroom

Unlike the distinctly modern-style bedroom, their principal bathroom is a more equal blend of East-meets-West. We paired this sleek tub with traditional wall paneling, custom cabinetry, and detailed trim for a fresh yet timeless feel. 

To invite a touch of energy into the space, we sourced this cherry blossom wallpaper, patterned curtains, a bubble-inspired chandelier, and “underwater art” in complementary aqua tones. This intriguing end table may look familiar, as well… It’s an off-cut from one of the beams in the dining room!

Opposite their freestanding tub, we also equipped them with a walk-in shower, floating vanity (for more foot space), and full-size mirror. These light, reflective tones help open up the room, while the warm-toned wood keeps it feeling comfortable, livable, and cohesive with their bedroom design.

The Mezzanine

The mezzanine’s close proximity to the principal bedroom makes it an easy second floor getaway for Erin and Andrew to enjoy while guests occupy the first floor. Rich in memories and items collected from their travels, we designed the space to include creative display shelving, this emerald green sofa, an encaustic forest scene by British Columbia artist Karel Doruyter, and — not to be missed — this puzzle-like table-meets-ottoman custom designed and supplied by Once a Tree Furniture. The blank wall in the distance is intended as a future gallery wall for the couple’s growing art collection.  

Here’s the view from the mezzanine — a veritable crow’s nest for seeing if guests are content, soaking up the view, or deciding to head down and join the party. Speaking of, let us go downstairs next to view some other private spaces…

Guest Bedroom

Naturally, this home’s isolated location — and Erin and Andrew’s love for entertaining — made it essential to have amenities suited for out-of-town guests and family. Though we designed other guest rooms in Erin and Andrew’s home, the most noteworthy is this child-friendly room:

Equipped with two bunk-beds, creative wall niches, and graphic wallpaper, this room is sure to delight both young and mature alike. We left the floor space empty to give future occupants plenty of space to run around as desired. The adjoining bathroom echoes the same colour palette and spirit of creativity, with multi-tone concrete hexagonal tiles, a simple vanity, and deep drawers for housing guests’ essentials.

Home Office

When it came to designing Andrew’s home office, we knew that this space might need to double as overflow guest accommodations, too. To ensure that floor space would be clear for additional sleeping quarters, we kept the main design elements to the walls — with a bookcase, bench seating and a queen size Murphy bed integrated into the wall panelling. This Mid-Century style desk provides Andrew with a beautiful place to work, yet is easy to move as needed.

In keeping with the nature-inspired feel of the rest of the home, we sourced this branch light fixture by Brothers Dressler in Toronto. Like the natural world, it is perfectly imperfect, adding an unexpected twist to this polished space.

The Study

Last but certainly not least, we come to the study. Remember when I mentioned that Erin and Andrew’s principal bedroom used to be located off the kitchen? This is it. By converting it into a study and TV room, Erin and Andrew now have a second living space to lounge or entertain intimate gatherings. 

We furnished the room with a custom sectional, a new  soapstone fireplace, and built-in bench seating. The metal bird sculpture by British Columbia artist Carl Sean McMahon artfully takes flight near the great outdoors, infusing grace and movement into this handsome room.

Flanking the fireplace, we designed custom bookshelves for their favourite reads, a Samsung Frame TV for entertainment, and cabinets for storing games, liqueur, or any other staples that make this room a cozy place to relax and gather. (If you ask me, it has all the makings of a quintessential home library.)

For Erin and Andrew, designing their PEI home was a dream decades in the making — and not just any home, but this one in particular.

A native Islander, Erin grew up immersed in the natural beauty of Prince Edward Island’s North Shore. In her childhood bedroom, a poster of New London Bay and the dunes of Cavendish National Park graced her walls, all rich golds, vibrant greens, and deep blues. In the ‘90s, when she saw a home being built on the shoreline, she knew it had the same views and wondered who was lucky enough to call it their own.

Fast forward almost two decades later, and Erin had nearly forgotten about her dream home on the water. She and Andrew were happily living and working in Moncton, New Brunswick. Though they imagined moving to the island for their distant retirement years, they enjoyed their life in the city and traveled often across Canada and beyond.

Safe to say, they were shaken out of their regular routine when they discovered that this home in their dream location had hit the market! Should they move to their retirement destination 20 years earlier than planned? Or would they let this opportunity pass them by? They jumped on it.

Thanks to a touch of kismet, becoming the proud owners of this stunning 9,000 square-foot home was easy. Once inside, however, there was much more work to be done…

Dated architecture, rounded edges, a tight layout (despite the home’s size), and other outdated features had them turning to the experts for help. They called us in from the West Coast, alongside Open Practice Architecture from the East Coast. Together, we assessed the property and developed our objectives…

1. Modernize the home while paying homage to PEI’s coastal vernacular
2. Design a whole new layout conducive to entertaining and hosting that also took advantage of the stunning views.
3. Create a sense of coziness and purpose within the large, open spaces
4. Marry the couple’s divergent tastes: old farmhouse vs. sleek and modern
5. Display — and add to — the couple’s extensive art collection

After months of design and several years of construction, navigating the trials of the pandemic and enduring a final battering by hurricane Fiona, Andrew and Erin persevered, making this home a one-of-a-kind transformation that they are delighted to call their own. This journey has undoubtedly proven that every ounce of effort was worth it. Let’s step inside…

Sky-High & Artful Entryway

Fresh. Natural. Full of possibility. We designed Erin and Andrew’s entryway to feel welcoming and spacious, with a dramatic yet understated custom light installation (by Propellor Studio in Vancouver) and a clean-cut oak table, designed by us and built by Brodye Chappell Builds. A cozy, tucked-away bench greets guests and softens the space, providing the perfect place to remove shoes.

The white oak flooring, florals foraged from their garden, and textile art by Mary Anne Donovan of Newfoundland, set the tone for a home inspired by their beautiful locale. This nature motif is carried through each space with material and artwork curated from local and Canadian artists and makers — one of our favourite ways to bring personality and uniqueness to a space. 

Cozy Yet Spacious Living Room

Enter the living room, and you are immediately greeted by those views that Erin had admired for years. The clients worked with their architect to remove the original turret and replace this wall with full-height commercial glazing that maximizes visibility. Of course, when drawing attention to the view it also helps to bring the colours of the outdoors in. A bay-inspired palette of rich navy blues, warm walnut, and soft cream mimic the landscape, giving it a tangible presence in the space.

For furnishings (sourced mostly from Once a Tree Furniture in Vancouver), we adopted a balanced approach of modern West Coast style and more traditional East Coast sensibilities. This blend harmonizes the couple’s divergent styles in a way that feels fresh, personal, and timeless.

As you know, one of our main challenges was making this space feel comfortable and intimate despite its large scale. After all, Andrew and Erin wanted a living room with a warm, inviting feel, where they could entertain groups of family and friends. By keeping things to a human scale and creating intimate “moments” in different areas, we ensured that this room — and every other room in the home — serves its main and ancillary functions.

Case in point: This open living space can be used for large gatherings, for Erin to play the piano (with or without an audience), or for more intimate seating and games near the window. 

We wanted Andrew and Erin to have more than one view from their living room, especially when the sun sets. Designing an inspired kitchen was our answer. Although their home’s original kitchen was secluded in a closed-off room to the right (now the butler’s pantry), we knew that relocating it here would be the perfect solution, creating an interior focal point and a way for them to enjoy cooking as a couple or when entertaining.

Since the living room, kitchen, and mezzanine are one open space, we continued a careful selection of finishes and fixtures that blend the best of both coasts — bay, dunes, and forest. White oak flooring and these striking beams from Quebec help these individual spaces feel separate yet cohesive.

A Kitchen for All Occasions

Next, let us step into the kitchen itself. When walking in, it is difficult to know which feature captures attention first: the custom island in navy (built by Wildwood Cabinets in Moncton), the two-toned globe pendants wrapped in brass, or the sea-inspired backsplash. Either way, it has the crisp, modern lines Andrew loves and touches of farmhouse character through copper vessels and accessories.

The backsplash is well worth a closer look — and not just because each fishscale tile was hand-selected and assembled to create this ombré mosaic. Made by our friends at Edgewater Studio in North Vancouver, these glass tiles offered us room to get creative and make a statement. Complemented by Shaker style cabinets with handsome walnut pulls and countertops in Caesarstone quartz, this space is relaxing and inspiring all at once.

To the right of the kitchen, we created another built-in nook that features Andrew’s beloved Slayer espresso machine atop a rich, walnut counter. All of his essentials are within easy reach, including access to another hidden space that is full of functionality…

Farmhouse-Inspired Butler’s Pantry

Welcome to the butler’s pantry, which, believe it or not, used to be the kitchen! As I mentioned, it was very small for the size of the home and closed off from the rest of the living space. Instead, we transformed it into a space perfect for catering, storage, and meal prep that keeps messes out of sight. 

Stylistically, we embraced a European farmhouse feel, leaning toward Erin’s preferred aesthetic. A floor-to-ceiling custom display cabinet, beautifully stocked bookshelves, and a spacious island with a butcher’s block top, infuse this room with warmth and charm.

On the left side of the room, we updated the sink and added custom Roman shades and accessories that have a rustic, farmhouse feel. This is the perfect, no-stress space to make a mess — which naturally happens when cooking, baking, or hosting a crowd. Next, let us exit the butler’s pantry and go back through the kitchen…

A Dining Room that Beckons

This is the view you will see on your path, with cerulean waves that beckon. Andrew and Erin found this triptych by Leanna Wolff while vacationing in Kauai, and it adds the perfect amount of bright color, movement, and energy to the space. 

Formerly a 3-season porch, we enclosed this room, accented it with another drop-dead gorgeous light installation by Propellor Studios, and filled it with comfortable, front-row seats to views of the dunes. This beautiful dining table is another SHD design and Brodye Builds creation, with window treatments that mimic the pattern in the butler’s pantry wallpaper for a cohesive feel.

Last but not least, more subtle elements of the design include custom wall moulding and a herringbone pattern for the white oak floor — which is different from the rest of the home. This keeps it feeling uniquely separate yet connected to the other spaces. For the next room on our tour (and post-meal entertainment), we will have to head to the basement…

Suave Home Bar & Entertainment Room

Is it a bar, lounge, or TV room? Answer: All three. This multi-purpose space has everything Andrew and Erin need to entertain guests or embark on a mini getaway in their own home. The custom honeycomb shelving in walnut immediately steals the show, offering a place for Andrew to display (and enjoy) his impressive scotch collection. A modern billiard table and golf simulator make this room a truly fun and flexible space.

Mudroom, Nook & Powder Room for Guests

These rooms were designed for a different type of guest: Erin’s piano students. They come in via the mudroom, enjoy the cozy window seat nook while waiting, and have this beautiful powder room to enjoy at their leisure. Following a lush garden theme, we integrated lively wallpaper and window treatment patterns, brass accents, and this stunning floating counter made of wood salvaged from a church in Nova Scotia. We hear that these rooms get more compliments than any other room in the house!

Interesting Fact: Besides the stunning views of the Cavendish Dunes, this property is located near the birthplace of Lucy Maud Montgomery, the author of Anne of Green Gables. The converted schoolhouse at the top of our clients’ property was where Montgomery taught school. Is there anything about this home that doesn’t feel like serendipity?

This beautiful North Vancouver home belongs to a nature-loving and health-conscious couple, Emma and Vince (names changed), their two young children, and their dog, Jasper. When they contacted us about renovating and furnishing their kitchen and family room, we walked in and saw a world of potential waiting to be uncovered. 

Before: Larkhall Crescent Home

Like many original North Vancouver homes, the interior was definitely dated. We encountered late ‘80s finishes in powder pink and teal green, old carpet, and a kitchen that wasn’t maximized to suit this family’s modern-day lifestyle. However, the size of the rooms offered us a ton of space with which to get creative. 

Knowing our clients’ love of cooking, need for work spaces (Emma and Vince both work remotely), and growing family, we developed a design concept that would increase usable space, optimize storage, and create intimacy in this large area. As for the style, we were inspired by their European roots, inventing a new and modern take on “Belgian Farmhouse” style. Now, the home is truly one-of-a-kind.

After: Warm & Cozy Family Room

Fresh, bright, and comfortable, this living area has been transformed! We started with the fireplace as a focal point, selecting aged brick tiles for added texture and a crisp wood mantle. The taupe-coloured sectional infuses the room with visual warmth and serves the added purpose of separating the family room from the kitchen.

Emma and Vince were also keen on using non-toxic materials in their home, and we were happy to oblige. To meet their needs, we sourced natural wood elements and sought out Canadian-made products – that adhere to high health standards – whenever possible.

Look closer at the elements of this space, and you will find this stunning, honeycomb-patterned rug in earthy gold, beige, and charcoal tones. It’s plush to the touch and full of visual texture that brings this room’s colour palette together. We sourced these two-tone chairs with caning, petrified wood side table, black sconces, and botanical prints in greyscale from local artist, Heather Johnston.

We topped off the space with this dark wood and rattan console that offers storage facing the kitchen and presents an opportunity to display cherished items. The result is a cozy lounging space brimming with comfort and functionality. It’s perfect for enjoying quality family time, or Emma can simply slide the coffee table away to make room for her morning yoga practice.

Moody & Welcoming Kitchen for Healthy Living

This kitchen looks very different from how it started, right? Though we didn’t touch any walls, the kitchen has almost doubled in usable space! We created a long, extended island with storage, an outlet for small appliances, and seating for comfortable prep, after-school snacking, or mingling among friends.

On the other side of the island, the family has even more storage and an integrated dishwasher within easy reach of the sink, perfect for quick clean-up. From this angle, you can also see the expansive custom Shaker cabinetry in white and the integrated double ovens. These facilitate their cooking experience and gave us the opportunity to add an additional surprise…

A coffee garage station and more hidden storage! Keeping these items located along the perimeter allows them to be accessed by the family or their guests without someone getting under the cook’s feet. These are the little details that make everyday life easier and more enjoyable.

Moving deeper into the kitchen, the seamless induction cooktop topped with a freestanding concealed hood fan commands attention in a soft yet prominent way. The natural wood accent mirrors the fireplace mantle, and the choice of off-black wood-grain cabinets not only continues our black-and-white colour palette but adds a sense of depth and contrast. The corner sink is located to the right and perfectly positioned with a view of their thriving backyard.

To invite more of this family’s character into the space, we mixed metals for interest — matte black, dark pewter, and warm brass — and created open shelves in white oak for their plants and decor. You can also glimpse the tumbled edge of the backsplash tile, which echoes the rustic brick of the fireplace. It adds that farmhouse charm while still feeling timeless and sophisticated.

Last but not least, we designed this dining banquette in the bay window (with integrated bench storage, of course), where the family can share a meal together, the kids can do homework, or Emma and Vince can work and enjoy a change of scenery from their offices. Like the other spaces in the home, it was designed to be beautiful, multi-functional, and long-lasting.

Welcoming & Bright Home with Forest Views

Ahhh… can you imagine coming home to a space as bright and soothing as this one? To find inspiration for this home’s interiors, we needed to look no further than out the windows, where mountain views greet us to the north and the ocean beckons from the south. 

Paying homage to their locale, we curated a colour palette of subtle blues and grays, warm-toned woods, and natural materials, all set against a crisp, white backdrop. These help us create a seamless visual transition between the interior and exterior. Let’s start our tour in the living area…

A Cozy Living Area with Warmth & Dimension

In the living area, the fireplace was the starting point for the design, as it determined the size of the space and the scale of our furnishings. To keep this area feeling cozy but not crowded, we selected this soft ottoman to serve as a table surface with a tray or as additional seating when Jeremy and Cynthia host guests. (Multi-purpose items are one of the 5 elements of The Simple Home.)

Additional textures — the sofa, upholstered swivel chairs, pillows, and ceramic wall art reminiscent of sand dollars — offer further depth and dimension in this simple yet layered space. The result is a cozy living room area perfect for a relaxing read on an overcast day or a social evening by the fire.

While daunting at first, this home’s small and open footprint offered a special opportunity for us to design thoughtful “zones”. To create a defined living space, we used an area rug to establish a border and situated the larger seating (the sofa) on the right. Its visual weight serves as a grounding barrier that naturally separates the living and dining areas. 

Overhead, the centrally located brass and glass chandelier serves as another focal point, making the entire living area feel like one unit. Last but not least…

Styled with tall decorative lamps, this light oak and rattan console sits just behind the sofa, creating an additional visual barrier between the living and dining areas. We styled it with accessories that complement the overall palette, and it has the added benefit of providing storage right where Jeremy and Cynthia need it, the dining area.

An Art-Infused Dining Area

The dining area is warm, woodsy, and filled with locally sourced art that Jeremy and Cynthia love. Next to the console is a custom textile piece from Vancouver artist, With Strings Attached, that mimics the scenic, mountain backdrop. The blue hues of the piece work in harmony with the warm wood dining table, cool gray upholstered chairs, and neutral stools at the kitchen bar. 

On the other side of the space, is Jeremy’s and Cynthia’s favourite piece, a commissioned work of art by local maker, Katie Napier. Carefully positioned in a central location and framed by two modern sconces, this piece captures the feel of gentle waters on a misty day and evokes calm.

Other curated pieces include this rectangular vessel centrepiece by sculptural artist, Martha Sturdy, bearing a stunning moss arrangement by Soul Roots Moss Art. As this couple can attest, a treasured memento or piece of art can transform your space and your mood, transporting you to a relaxed and peaceful state.

A Bedroom Full of Light & Texture

This beautiful bedroom is another manifestation of Jeremy and Cynthia’s favourite experiences: hiking the rainforest trails and enjoying the spray of the sea. The blue-and-green branching pattern found in the window treatments and pillows ground the space, while bright turquoise lamps — akin to sea glass — infuse the room with a touch of coastal vibrance. 

Similar to the living area, we added comfort through texture and warm tones, incorporating oak end tables, natural woven wall decor above the headboard, knitted ottomans at the foot of the bed, a textured duvet, and an extra plush area rug. 

A Loft Inspired by Flora & Fauna

For the loft space, we moved away from coastal elements and decided to ground the space in the more earthy elements of nature: flora and fauna. We selected an umber-hued sofa complemented by floral decorative pillows and walls adorned with botanical prints by Heather Johnston.

This multi-purpose space serves as a reprieve for our clients to read, practice yoga, and relax. Alternatively, a Frame TV intentionally meant to blend as art allows the space to function as a secondary entertainment space or a place for their granddaughter to play and sleep over.

When they are not traveling the world, Matthew and Anna (names changed) love to cook meals at home with their teenage daughter, entertain family and friends, and live amongst their cherished travel souvenirs and heirlooms. Their dining room, however, was far from the perfect backdrop for these experiences. 

Before: Dining Room

When Matthew and Anna contacted us, they imagined a space that would comfortably seat 8 to 10 people and incorporate their beautiful  inherited dining table and sideboard in a fresh, modern way. Above all, they wanted a dining room that they would feel proud to share. 

They worked with us to design, lightly renovate, and furnish their dining room and adjacent living space. Now, the room is nothing short of inviting and elevated.

Classic Yet Contemporary Dining Room

Viewed from the living area, the dining room is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. Matthew and Anna wanted dark blue for the walls, and we couldn’t have been happier to find the perfect shade for them. By leaning darker, this rich blue creates the perception of depth, making the room feel enticing, comfortable and secluded.

The previous built-ins were underwhelming and lacked function, so we designed wider, taller, double sided cabinets that integrated the existing bulk-head, and then accessorized the shelves with the family’s travel finds, books, and decor. Topping these units with brass art lights not only blends contemporary and traditional styles, it also draws attention to the dining table’s modern show-stopping chandelier. You can’t miss it.

Inside the dining room, the effect is equally impressive: enveloping yet spacious, warm yet cool, classic yet contemporary. We incorporated their heirloom pieces seamlessly into the design thanks to the 1:2 ratio. For every traditional piece, we introduced two more modern or contemporary pieces — clean lines, subtle curves, and lustrous brass hardware. The result is a collected yet updated look.

In any room with dark walls, lighting is of the utmost importance. We placed a mirror adjacent to the window to reflect natural light throughout the room, and we kept the trim and ceiling white for brightness. To provide maximum versatility, we provided multiple light sources that can be adjusted to create different levels of light to suit any mood or occasion. These include: pot lights and a chandelier on dimmers, a sculptural trilight lamp on the sideboard, and art lights on the bookcases and above important art pieces.  

The built-ins have another surprise waiting inside this special dining room:

Rather than keep them white like we did in the living room, we painted the back wall of the book cases the same dark blue as the walls in the rest of the room. This reduces the contrast with the surrounding walls and emphasizes the white outline of the cabinets. We also love the dark blue walls’ role as a beautiful backdrop for this family’s treasures. The brass accessories and hand-painted vases and bowls feel like part of the experience. 

Of course, what is beauty without function? It may not look like it, but the base storage is only accessible from the dining room side. The units include deep cabinets for storing serving ware, as well as another delightful surprise: silverware drawers lined in luxurious navy velvet! 

Lastly, we designed this beautiful nook for their heirloom sideboard. From afar, the wall looks as if it has texture and perhaps a touch of shine. Up close, you will notice that it is actually navy blue wallpaper with tiny golden dots. This unique touch accentuates the brass in the room touches throughout the space.. The room feels curated, contemporary, and full of character.

What comes to mind when you envision the perfect multi-faceted living spaces? Is it an expansive amount of counter space at which to cook, work, or entertain freely? Abundant and practical cabinet organization to keep clutter at bay and the space looking beautiful? Or perhaps the answer is all of the above, along with a cosy spot to retreat after the long day is complete. 

The project I’m sharing with you today has each of these elements in spades: spaces that combine beauty with function, promote comfort and relaxation, and make time at home enjoyable for this active family of three. Before I introduce you to these incredible spaces, let’s meet the people behind the design…

An Active Family Ready to Live Well at Home

The family behind this Vancouver townhouse has been working and schooling from home since the beginning of the pandemic. Needless to say, this professional couple (let’s call them Nancy and Ian) and their teenage daughter had become well acquainted with their spaces and motivated to make some changes for the better.

Their main focus was to remodel the kitchen, where they hoped to create a functional layout for everyday use. They also loved the idea of incorporating a home office right into the kitchen itself. 

However, Nancy and Ian knew that renovating the kitchen alone wouldn’t create the full transformation they were looking for. Kitchens interact intimately with their adjacent spaces, especially family rooms, and they were determined to elevate their daily living experience from top to bottom.

Together, we redesigned the kitchen and living area to increase work surfaces and storage solutions, create comfortable and luxurious spaces to unwind, and update the overall aesthetic to fit their more modern, collected taste. Here’s how it turned out…

Reveal: Modern, Refined Kitchen Design with Practical Organization

Expansive counter space, a functional layout, and clean, practical organization…that is what every hardworking kitchen should include. Being mindful that this is where Nancy and her daughter spend most of their time working, we placed our primary focus on keeping this space bright and polished to help promote increased productivity.

Before, the kitchen layout felt small and cramped because of the poor placement of an existing peninsula. In order to expand the space and maximize the surface area, we removed the peninsula and designed a long, narrow island with seating for four. Perfect for spreading out while completing work assignments or enjoying a refreshing midday cup of tea together.

Countless details go into creating a beautiful and functional design, especially for a kitchen, but practical storage solutions are fundamental to making the space flow well and function seamlessly. Without it, it becomes too easy for clutter and disorganization to seep in. 

That said, we developed a thoughtful plan of action to remove an inefficient pantry closet and integrate storage around the refrigerator, a more organized and accessible location. Not only did it give this space a renewed sense of purpose, but it improves accessibility and daily usage.

From an aesthetic perspective, gorgeous walnut veneer cabinets add stunning, grainy texture, while modern brass accents infuse the space with added luxury. And let’s not forget about the backsplash. What isn’t to love? The far from boring geometric pattern reflects a pop of playful refinement, perfectly fitting the family’s personality.

Have you noticed the two skylights? While additional natural light is never a bad thing, the location of the skylights felt awkward. We were unable to move them – so I’ll let you in on a little secret…whenever there are existing elements that we cannot change we incorporate them into the design as if we put them there on purpose, rather than just working around them! 

We put our creativity to work, positioning the mother-daughter workstation parallel to the skylight to prevent glare on the computer screens. This brings us to the clean and quiet corner of the kitchen…

A Spacious Home Office in the Kitchen

Setting up a beautifully designed and dedicated workspace is crucial to maximizing productivity when working and schooling from home. The stunning light gray cabinets, simple brass accents, and clean lines offer a neat and organized space that is separate but still cohesive with the rest of the space.

Other benefits include great lighting, ample storage, and the fact that this space is offset enough that another family member could easily cook, prepare a meal, or even entertain without running into each other. Plus, who wouldn’t feel motivated to get to work in a gorgeous space like this?

Cosy and Collected Family Room

Next, is the family room. This room was unique in the fact that work had begun before we arrived. Unfortunately, after Nancy and Ian ran into issues with their fireplace ductwork, their progress came to a standstill. Thankfully, our team arrived to help elevate their vision into stunning, finished results.

Our team resolved the fireplace venting issue and created a wall of millwork that seamlessly incorporated the existing marble tile surround, reflecting light and adding to the brightness of the space. The millwork not only hides the unsightly vent, it also adds a significant amount of functional storage.

On the other side of the room…

…a comfortable and personal lounging area where the family can relax and enjoy quality time together. We up-leveled their existing sectional with a bright combination of throw pillows in cool colours and patterns, making this space the epitome of comfort. The warm wood finish on the coffee table carries this element in from the kitchen, tying the two areas together.

To add character to the space, we used whimsical design elements and intentionally curated a personalized gallery wall of cherished artwork and family photos. The jumping-off point for the colour scheme was a colourful elk painting done by their daughter. These are the final touches that bring a smile to your face.  

While uncluttered and methodical workspaces are beneficial for happiness and productivity, I would argue that it is equally valuable to have a restorative retreat where you can begin and end each day. Imagine starting your day with a fresh cup of coffee and enjoying the dancing flames of the fire as snow, or more likely in Vancouver, rain, falls outside. Ahh…a quiet, beautiful moment to set your day up for success.

Imagine looking up from your plush reading chair and seeing the early morning fog lifting off the Georgia Straight. As the mist floats up to the surrounding mountains, you inhale deeply and sink further into your chair, worries melting away. Now, this is relaxation.

It’s easy to destress from life’s demands when your views feel like your very own nature retreat. But what if the inside of your home was equally peaceful? What if it inspired just as much rest and rejuvenation as the great outdoors?

The project I’m sharing with you today puts this goal to the test. Inspired by the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest and our philosophy of everyday luxury, we’ve created an experiential Lions Bay home designed for deep, lasting peace and all of the special moments that go with it.

Meet Our Nature-Loving Clients in Lions Bay

Meet John and Tyler, the couple behind this 1970s post-and-beam renovation. As soon as they stepped inside this Lions Bay home, they were smitten with the mid-century feel and the surrounding community, but they knew the property needed some help uncovering its hidden potential.

Unable to pass it up, John and Tyler purchased this gem as their forever home and committed to making it a place where they would look forward to spending downtime together or entertaining friends and family. They initially contacted us for help furnishing their main floor living spaces, but as all great projects do, it soon took on a life of its own…

When I entered the home myself, I had a reaction similar to John and Tyler’s — I saw a world of possibility. I confidently proposed the idea of a kitchen renovation, sharing the potential of a larger project, and John and Tyler eagerly agreed. 

Design and Lifestyle Goals

Every design project starts with understanding our clients’ style and lifestyle goals. In other words, we have to know our destination before we can begin the journey. (While there is a time and place for adventure sans destination, we would prefer to save that for the trails, not for a significant investment in your home).

The plan of action for this home in particular was simple: to create an inviting space inspired by the calm beauty of nature and to preserve the original post-and-beam character of the home. 

Let’s skip past the months of renovations, furniture backorders, and Covid delays and step inside the front door of their new, fully renovated and furnished main floor living spaces.

Design Reveal: Welcoming Entryway & Expansive Living Spaces

Ahhh… now that’s a breath of fresh air! Before, the space was dark, the ceilings felt low, and there were so many wood elements that they all blended together. Now, bright white walls and ceilings accentuate this home’s post-and-beam character, bringing out those warm wood tones and visually enlarging the space.

To the left of the front door we added a full height wall that separates the kitchen from the entrance, creating a sense of arrival. That wall is adorned with two teardrop sconces and applied wall moulding in a custom-designed geometric pattern that recalls the angles of the wood beams. It adds texture and interest, while creating unity with the new shiplap ceiling. Meanwhile, two ottomans in misty blue-grey fit snugly under the console table, offering flexible additional seating that can be pulled into the living and dining spaces as required. 

On the right, we installed a built-in cabinet and bench seat in lieu of a standard closet, creating a welcoming place for guests to remove and store their shoes and coats while visiting. This abstract painting by Vancouver artist, Lisa Ochowycz, sets a mood for the home that is equal parts stormy and bright, reflecting the changing weather patterns of its coastal location.

Now let’s walk into the main living space…

Moving into the open concept living area, you can see several separate yet beautifully distinct spaces for a variety of functions… including tempting in the outdoors. By using a soft and neutral colour palette inspired by the sea, the overall interior doesn’t compete with what is beyond the windows. Instead, it feels relaxing, harmonious, and as spacious and limitless as the sky stretching over the Georgia Straight.

We also refinished the gorgeous, original oak hardwood with a custom whitewash. The visual softness ties the whole palette together seamlessly and looks much more modern. Let’s focus on the living area…

What a view. We knew this space had the potential to replace the TV room as the favorite place to unwind, so we layered in comfortable, high-quality furniture, added modern floor and table lamps for task lighting, and made sure that every seat had a view.

One of the biggest challenges in this home, and in any post and beam home, is the inability to conceal electrical wiring in the exposed wood ceilings. This can make the rooms dark, especially in relation to the brightness pouring in the South West facing windows. We made the decision to cover the original cedar tongue-in-groove ceiling with white painted shiplap, both to brighten the space and to conceal electrical wiring so we could add much-needed extra lighting throughout this space. Problem solved.

Just beyond this living room, we have…

A Dining Room with Built-In Banquette & 180° Views

Another challenge in this home was maximising space, and this stunning custom designed built-in banquette is a perfect example of a creative design solution that goes above and beyond its function. Its sinuous shape is a work of art highlighting both the stillness of the forest and the flowing currents of the ocean..

We furnished this dining space with a round solid oak table and chairs from Once A Tree Furniture and added a modern yet minimal light fixture. The fixture’s black frame coordinates perfectly with the matte black hardware, entryway sconces, and other lighting and decor throughout the rest of the home. 

It’s safe to say that this spot will invite cheerful conversation, quiet contemplation, and everything in between.

A Relaxing Kitchen with a Peaceful View

Situated conveniently within serving distance of the dining room, we have the kitchen. We wanted to make a statement in this all-important space, and in this case, colour was our answer. We proposed the idea of cabinets painted in this deep-sea teal colour, and John and Tyler loved it. 

On one wall we have the sink and paneled refrigerator, and on the opposite wall we have the range and plenty of additional storage. We used shiplap on the ventilation hood for added texture.

The best part about this kitchen? If you stand near the sink and look out over the water, the blue tones of the cabinets meld right into the view outside, as if they are one and the same. That’s how you bring nature inside! Strategically placed greenery achieves the same effect with the forest, mimicking the sightline of the trees and creating a fully immersive kitchen inspired by the outdoors.

Minimal black and white accents, along with the crisp, matte white, solid surface countertops, keep things simple and tasteful. Instead of upper cabinets on this wall we added open shelving in natural wood. This gave us a chance to display decorative earthenware and other collected items. 

Doing the dishes doesn’t seem nearly so arduous in a space like this, does it? 

Sophisticated Library & Moody Home Theatre

If you look past the living area, you will see a stunning view of the newly designed library wall that leads into the home theatre beyond. What was originally an awkward closet is now a series of graphic bookshelves that give this wall a renewed sense of purpose.

We styled the shelves with accessories for a perfectly polished look, but between you and me, I have a feeling John and Tyler will swap out some of this decor for their own book collection — and why shouldn’t they? That’s the beauty of a home designed just for you.

Blending in with the shelves and beckoning with its enticing blue-grey glow, we spy the home theatre. Come on in…

Welcome to our clients’ luxurious home theatre. Ombre wallpaper and stormy grey furnishings set the tone for a comfortable, cosy entertainment space with an undeniable hint of mystery. We used custom pillows to bring an organic touch into this room, with accents of natural wood and matte black to make it feel cohesive with the rest of the home. 

On the other side of the sofa…

…the perfect lounge area where John and Tyler can read their library selections, entertain friends after work, or enjoy an impromptu date night. 

These two-toned pendants steal the show and offer functional lighting, while gorgeous artwork from Canadian artist, Lisa Ochowycz, graces the sideboard and sets the mood. To keep the home cohesive, we commissioned the same deep-sea teal (from the kitchen) for this custom sideboard designed by our talented friends at Once A Tree Furniture.

If you were wondering about the view from the lounge, it doesn’t disappoint. The custom ombre wallpaper melts seamlessly into the exterior mountain views. And while I would like to take the credit, I have to admit that it could not have worked out better if we had planned it!

Special details like these are what make this effortlessly relaxed home the perfect place to escape and recharge from the demands of everyday life.

Meet our Delightful Clients

The family behind this 1950s North Vancouver home transformation enjoy entertaining friends just as much as cosying up to watch a movie together. A professional couple (I’ll call them Jon and Anna) with two elementary school-aged sons, Anna and Jon approached us with the task of furnishing the main floor living spaces and the basement of their family home. 

Anna is a busy lawyer who is now working almost full time from home, and Jon works in the film industry. With full careers, two active boys, and a love of gathering, they craved a home that could support their everyday lifestyle.

Design and Lifestyle Goals

Our central goal for this project was simple: to uncover the hidden potential in their home and create a family-friendly space that functioned well and flowed seamlessly.

On the main floor, our clients tasked us with creating an area for the family to relax and entertain, along with crafting a work and play space for the boys. They also dreamed of a more functional and bright basement, which they envisioned as a dual purpose family room and home office for Anna.

Reveal: Comfortable and Welcoming Entryway & Living Room

Imagine you are coming home, and you walk through a bright, sunny front door like this one. You are met by this entryway of calming earth and sea tones, paired with warm, natural wood flooring. You feel instantly welcomed and eager to venture further inside… The same is now true for our clients!

The simple details in their entryway are thoughtfully arranged with clean lines and colourful art as the focal point, achieving a timeless and friendly aesthetic. Dried wheat brings movement into the space and plays up the beauty of nature, while the vibrant yet warm colours and textures evoke feelings of comfort and homecoming.

The entry flows seamlessly into this connected living area, which is adorned with ample seating strategically arranged to host and accommodate joyful conversations. With the fireplace and wood mantel as the focal point, these natural elements and hues warm up the room to make it feel beautifully lived-in (not like an untouchable museum).

Another colourful work of art graces the space above Jon’s and Anna’s sofa, and we used decorative pillows and a throw blanket to tempt those colours into the rest of the room. A simply styled coffee table keeps the space feeling open and engaged. Reading material, anyone?

Just beyond this living area, you get a glimpse of the second space our clients requested on their main floor…

A Collected Space for Children to Work + Play

When Jon and Anna realised that their formal dining area wasn’t being used to its full potential, they imagined creating a work and play space for their boys instead. We came up with a plan to create a shared desk area with plentiful storage.

This timeless natural wood desk was the perfect way to maximise surface area and give the boys plenty of space to do homework during the school year, or spend time crafting or building LEGOs during the summers. The drawers provide storage for all the wonderful items that fuel their productivity or creativity. Or both.

I also love how the white floating shelves display a collection of nostalgic toys, providing just the right amount of childhood endearment to this sophisticated and functional space. This workspace now has endless possibilities for the boys, and it helps Jon and Anna keep their minds and spaces clear, too. Which brings us to…

Basement Family Room & Home Office

In general, we knew we had to maximise surface area in this ‘50s home, and this was especially true for our clients’ basement. I’m happy to say that we designed an effortlessly comfortable space that focuses on family and makes it simple to settle in and work… or leave the workday behind.

Welcome to this dual-function office and family room. Toward the back of the room, we strategically positioned Anna’s wraparound desk facing out into the room and gave her a wallpaper-and-art backdrop for stunning Zoom calls (she has already received glowing compliments). There is plenty of storage for easy organization including a space to store the family’s shared printer near the door… so they don’t have to interrupt “Mom” to get to it. 

Anna also wanted the freedom to be able to relax in this space with her family and turn her back on the work day — quite literally! The sofa is perfectly positioned backing onto the desk allowing her to do just that. 

We relocated an existing mustard yellow chair and used pops of the same colour to integrate it into the overall scheme. The wood armrests on this modular sectional provide surfaces for snacks and drinks where there was no room for an end table. The walnut finish carries the theme of natural comfort from the upstairs spaces down into the family room. 

The view from the sectional is less business and more pleasure, featuring cosy seating and throw pillows in cheerful colours and patterns. 

The highlight of this space? A wallpapered accent wall where we were able to achieve the high-end feel of custom built-in shelving with a simple IKEA hack. The shelves and cabinetry around the television offer plenty of much needed storage space to house family games and movies at a budget price point. 

This fun room is the perfect balance of work and play, accommodating and supporting our clients’ daily family adventures.
