Before our meeting, I encourage clients to collect a handful of images showing spaces they are drawn to — whether this is through Pinterest, Houzz, magazine clippings, or saved images online. You do not need to worry about identifying your “style”. Instead, we help identify common threads in your images that can inform the path forward.

Perhaps you gravitate toward lighter palettes, layered textures, natural materials, or spaces that feel calm and uncluttered. Sometimes clients are surprised to see how consistent their preferences actually are once we review these images together. This exercise allows us to quickly identify the elements that resonate with you and begin shaping a design direction that feels authentic to your home.

Bathrooms, kitchens, pantries and mudrooms, often described as the “functional” rooms of the home, are usually where decorating quietly takes a back seat. They are viewed as practical, perhaps messy, and sometimes hidden from guests. Investments are understandably directed toward cabinetry, appliances, tile and plumbing fixtures, and by the time those substantial decisions are made, it can feel as though the work is done.

Yet these are the spaces that support the rhythm of daily life.

They hold our morning routines, the rush of after-school hours, the folding of endless laundry, the preparation of meals, and the quiet end-of-day retreat. They are also among the most costly rooms to renovate. For that reason alone, they deserve to be approached with intention from the beginning.

If we are already investing in beautiful hard finishes, why stop there?

When thoughtfully layered, these hardworking rooms can feel just as warm, personal and refined as any living space in the home. Here is how we approach furnishing and decorating them so they feel cohesive, elevated and entirely livable, without ever sacrificing durability.

1. Layering Personality with Art & Collected Details

Cabinetry and tile may form the foundation of a kitchen or bathroom, yet it is the layering that makes a space feel complete. Art belongs in every room of the home. Functional spaces are no exception. In our PEI Project, pictured below, the pantry was treated as a destination rather than a pass-through. 

The back wall became a focal point, anchored by colourful artwork that draws you through the kitchen with intention. The patterned wallpaper and millwork establish character, yet it is the art that introduces personality. What could have been a simple storage area becomes a moment.

In the adjoining kitchen, we saw the open shelving along the main island as an opportunity for thoughtful styling.

Collected copper vessels, ceramics and stacked books bring warmth and texture against the navy cabinetry. These shelves work hard, yet they feel curated, intentional, and elevated. Decorative objects soften the millwork and add a sense of livable luxury to a space used every single day.

Notice how none of these additions are extravagant. They are deliberate. Every detail carefully considered so the room feels refined yet relaxed rather than purely utilitarian.

2. Using Wallpaper for Warmth & Character

Wallpaper has the power to completely transform any space, and I particularly love using it in functional rooms. In wet areas, we specify vinyl wallpaper for durability. Proper ventilation and thoughtful installation ensure longevity. The goal is not to avoid beauty in moisture-prone spaces, but to curate with intention and choose materials that support how the room is used.

In the primary ensuite of our Newfoundland Project, we introduced wallpaper to soften the crisp white millwork and create visual depth.

The neutral floral pattern wraps the room gently, adding warmth and character without overwhelming the architecture. This addition makes the space feel layered and inviting rather than bare and clinical. Underfoot, the chevron tile floors resemble wood, bringing movement and subtle pattern and becoming part of the design language. It catches the eye and adds dimension, proving that even the most practical surfaces can double as art.

3. Creating Softness with Area Rugs

There is a long-standing belief that kitchens and bathrooms must be tile-only zones. While durable, that approach can leave these spaces feeling sterile and acoustically harsh. Today’s area rugs are available in durable and washable materials designed specifically for real life. Antique carpets have already withstood decades of use and, when crafted from 100% wool, can tolerate some moisture provided they are allowed to dry properly in a well-ventilated environment.

Additionally, an area rug absorbs sound, introduces texture, and visually grounds the room. It softens hard surfaces and brings a sense of quiet comfort that tile alone cannot achieve.

In our West Vancouver Project, pictured above, we layered a soft wool area rug into the primary bathroom just beneath the freestanding tub. The addition instantly shifted the atmosphere. The space no longer felt like a collection of hard finishes. Instead, it began to feel like a retreat, refined yet relaxed, and seamlessly connected to the warmth of the rest of the home.

4. Adding Drapery in Unexpected Places

A primary ensuite is often composed almost entirely of stone, porcelain, glass and lacquered finishes. The materials are beautiful. The craftsmanship is impeccable. Yet without softness, the room can feel more functional than restorative. One of my favourite ways to shift that feeling? Drapery.

Fabric introduces movement, colour and warmth in a way few other elements can. With proper ventilation and thoughtful fabric selection, softness and durability can coexist effortlessly, even in a bathroom.

In our PEI Project, pictured above, we incorporated full-height drapery and a tailored Roman shade in a vibrant floral motif. The fabric frames the freestanding tub and draws the eye upward, adding both verticality and personality. Paired with crisp millwork and marble flooring, the drapery softens the architecture and brings a sense of livable luxury to the space.

What makes this space feel truly layered, however, is the combination of elements. The underwater artwork above the tub introduces another moment of colour and personality, while the patterned wallpaper in the adjoining space creates continuity and depth. The result feels less like a room designed purely for function and more like a personalized private retreat.

5. Materials That Withstand Real Life

Functional spaces experience daily wear, from water and humidity to muddy boots and pet paws. Selecting the right materials from the beginning allows us to design rooms that feel elevated without feeling fragile.

Performance fabrics, often referred to as indoor/outdoor textiles, are one of my favourite tools in hardworking spaces. Many can be cleaned with a diluted bleach solution, making them ideal for kitchens, mudrooms and laundry rooms where spills from food, water, pets and children are inevitable. This opens the door to incorporating upholstered benches, cushions and seating in places that might otherwise feel austere.

In the Newfoundland mudroom, shown above, durable cabinetry finished in a soft sage provides generous storage while standing up beautifully to daily use. Matte black hardware adds contrast and strength, while the upholstered bench tucked next to the door invites comfort and warmth.

The patterned Roman shade brings colour and personality without sacrificing practicality. Underfoot, a washable area rug softens the tile and absorbs sound, creating a space that feels refined yet relaxed, even on the busiest mornings.

Hard surfaces deserve equal consideration.

In the powder room pictured above, we designed a vanity that resembles a piece of furniture. The fluted wood detailing adds texture and warmth, elevating the bathroom beyond the purely functional. Beside the mirror, two sculptural light fixtures catch the eye upward and introduce softness through form.

These spaces are proof that when foundational materials are selected wisely, we gain the freedom to layer warmth and personality without hesitation. The result is a home that supports your real life while still feeling beautiful and complete.

The second chapter of this West Vancouver home carries the same heart and intention as the first.

In Part I, we shared how the main floor and basement evolved into a modern coastal retreat for an active family of five and their two golden retrievers. We transformed the living spaces into ones that support busy days on the water, in the mountains, and on the court, while offering a soft place to land. With those spaces complete, it was time to move upstairs.

Project Scope

The second floor held incredible potential, yet the layout no longer reflected how the family lived. Originally designed with four bedrooms, it had served them well when all three boys were at home. As their eldest moved away for university, the opportunity arose to rethink this level entirely.

Our goal was to transform the primary suite, boys’ bedrooms, and shared bathroom into spaces that felt more functional, more spacious, and fully aligned with the calm, coastal aesthetic established downstairs.

These next rooms, each deeply personal, continue that story.

Light-Filled Stairway & Hallway

The journey upstairs begins with a space that often goes unnoticed: the stairway and upper hallway. Here, our intention was to create a sense of quiet continuity between the public spaces below and the private realm above.

Warm oak, soft whites, and abundant natural light set a serene tone. Shiplap detailing—now a subtle architectural thread throughout the home—continues onto the ceiling, drawing the eye upward and enhancing the feeling of height. A sculptural wood chandelier by Propellor Studio anchors the double-height entry, while a vibrant landscape painting adds a welcome hit of colour and personality.

This simple passageway becomes an experience of arrival, a reminder that even transitional spaces can feel considered and calm.

Textural & Bold Boys’ Bedrooms

Designing bedrooms for two nearly grown sons meant balancing longevity with personality. Each room needed to reflect its occupant while remaining cohesive with the home’s modern coastal aesthetic.

In one bedroom, a warm wood slat feature wall introduces vertical texture and a grounded, modern feel. Layered neutrals keep the space adaptable as tastes evolve. In another, a deep navy accent wall with geometric panelling brings boldness and structure. Textural bedding and understated accessories soften the edges, creating a space that feels both youthful and sophisticated.

Though distinct, each room offers clean lines, comfortable furnishings, and a sense of ease that supports study, sleep, and everything in between.

Shared Bathroom Designed for Real Life

With multiple boys sharing one bathroom, functionality was non-negotiable. By reclaiming square footage from the unused fourth bedroom, we created a more generous layout with improved storage and better flow.

Fresh finishes, abundant storage, and durable surfaces make this bathroom bright, streamlined, and easy to maintain – exactly what this stage of life requires. The updated palette ties back to the home’s coastal aesthetic, giving the room a clean, modern feel that will grow with the boys for years to come.

Primary Bedroom: A Serene Coastal Escape

For Robert and Elizabeth, the primary bedroom needed to offer a true sense of retreat. Their days are full, their home is lively, and they longed for a space that felt peaceful and restorative.

A palette of layered greys, soft whites, and pale wood tones sets a calming foundation. The wallpaper behind the bed introduces gentle, cloud-like movement that echoes the treetop views beyond the windows. The shiplap ceiling adds subtle architecture without overwhelming the room, helping the space feel airy and beautifully grounded.

One of the most beloved features is the three-sided fireplace, thoughtfully positioned so its glow can be enjoyed the moment you enter, from the comfort of the bed, or from a cozy chair tucked in the corner (often shared with their adorable golden retrievers).

With large windows and French doors opening to the surrounding trees, the connection to nature remains constant. The result is serene and effortless, a room that embraces rest while supporting the quieter moments of everyday life.

Primary Ensuite: Soft Coastal Luxury

The ensuite was a key driver for this renovation. The original layout felt tight and underwhelming, especially for a couple who dreamed of a tranquil space. With the reconfiguration, we were able to significantly increase the room’s size and improve its functionality. 

A custom double vanity in soft wood tones anchor the room with generous storage and clean, modern lines. Framed mirrors reflect the natural light beautifully, while brushed nickel hardware introduces a refined coastal elegance.

A freestanding tub sits beneath a generous skylight, allowing natural light to cascade into the room throughout the day. Shiplap panelling and delicately textured wallpaper create a layered backdrop—fresh, timeless, and quietly sophisticated.

Custom drapery frames the window with a floral pattern that softens the vertical lines of the shiplap and introduces a hint of movement. The sculptural chandelier overhead, with its cluster of delicate glass orbs, adds a moment of artistry yet keeps the space serene.

This room is one of my favourites in the entire home. The combination of layered neutrals, subtle textures, handcrafted details, and thoughtful lighting creates a feeling of refined tranquillity. It is a space designed to support a spa-like start and end to each day – calm, cohesive, and deeply livable.

A Walk-In Closet Designed for Everyday Ease

Previously, the primary closet was so small and awkward that Robert stored his clothing in a separate bedroom. Gaining back square footage from the unused fourth bedroom allowed us to completely reimagine this space.

Now, the walk-in closet enjoys its own window, flooding the room with natural light. Custom millwork provides dedicated zones for each of them, with hanging space, drawers, and open storage designed around their everyday routines.

It feels ordered, calm, and intuitive – a small but meaningful shift that makes mornings smoother and adds a touch of everyday luxury to their lives.

I like to think of the entryway as a gentle transition from the outside world into the comforts of home—an invitation into the life lived beyond the door. Every detail deserves to be carefully considered, whether that’s a sculptural light fixture, a touch of textured wallpaper, or a beautifully patterned floor chosen with intention.

Many homeowners struggle with this area for familiar reasons: not enough storage, too much clutter, or furnishings selected purely for utility. I approach the entryway as an opportunity to merge practicality with beauty in a way that feels warm, welcoming, and connected with the rest of the home. Here are the guiding principles I follow to shape an entryway that has both purpose and lasting impact:

1. Create a Sense of Arrival

An entry should always begin with a clear sense of arrival. I like to look for subtle ways to distinguish this moment from the rest of the home, no matter the size of the area. In a more compact space, that might mean adding a room divider, as we did in the West Vancouver mid-century-inspired home shown below.

The vertical slats create a gentle threshold without closing off the space, offering just enough definition to make the entry feel intentional and beautifully considered. Next to the door, we incorporated streamlined shoe storage, and the surface above provides a natural landing spot for keys and mail. These simple choices show how thoughtful placement can elevate the ease of returning home.

Space was limited, so we positioned a beautifully crafted credenza just outside the entry to support additional storage without overwhelming the smaller area. It also became a natural place to introduce curated styling. Artwork, ceramics, and a few favourite pieces bring warmth and personality to an otherwise modest footprint.

In contrast, our PEI Project, pictured below, had the opposite condition: an expansive, airy entry that required grounding and warmth to create an inviting sense of welcome.

We introduced a generous round table to establish a central focal point and create a natural pause upon entering. A custom built-in bench and handcrafted artwork add comfort and personality, while the tall ceiling and sculptural chandelier bring a modern coastal elegance. Every element contributes to a space that feels welcoming rather than vast.

These two projects show how thoughtful definition, whether achieved through custom millwork in a smaller home or considered furnishings in a larger one, can transform an undefined area into an entry that feels purposeful, functional, and beautifully resolved.

2. Establish a Soft, Welcoming Mood

Lighting has a remarkable ability to influence how a space feels the moment you step inside. A lamp on the console table offers gentle illumination for late-night returns, creating a sense of comfort and calm. In the early morning, that same soft glow eases you into the day without relying on harsh overhead lighting.

In our Newfoundland Project, pictured below, a white oak console table styled with a pair of symmetrical lamps creates the home’s first vignette. The effect is intentional and inviting, setting a refined yet relaxed mood from the outset.

A rust-coloured bench tucked underneath adds both warmth and practicality, giving the area a layered look that feels collected and welcoming. The winter landscape painting, part of our client’s own art collection, grounds the decor, and its earthy palette echoes the natural tones of the staircase runner and oak flooring.

3. Functionality That Supports Real Life

Hardworking features are essential in an entryway, and when chosen with intention, they contribute to the beauty of the space. A bench offers a comfortable spot for putting on or taking off shoes, and in some cases (like in the image above), it can tuck neatly beneath a console table to maximize every inch. A guest coat rack provides an easy, self-serve option for visitors, and with this, I often select sculptural metal designs that double as art.

In our Newfoundland Project, pictured below, a defined vestibule creates a protective transition from strong winds and wet weather, a considered design choice that adds both function and charm.

Durable materials play an impactful role in this area of the home. Wall paneling is one of my favourite solutions because it safeguards the walls from daily wear while adding texture and depth. Here, we selected a vintage-inspired floral patterned wallpaper above the paneling to introduce character and a touch of tradition. 

Marble mosaic tile underfoot handles snow- and rain-covered boots with ease and brings a subtle sense of movement to the space. Overhead, a globe pendant casts a gentle, welcoming glow that completes this hardworking yet beautifully layered vestibule.

4. Decorative Elements That Complete the Space

Decorative elements are never an area to skip, especially in an entryway. An area rug adds texture and helps define the zone, and washable options are especially important for obvious reasons. Artwork introduces personality and offers an early glimpse into the design language of the home. A well-positioned mirror can amplify natural light and create a feeling of openness in smaller footprints.

In some homes, including our West Vancouver project pictured below, even a few intentional pieces can have a meaningful impact in an otherwise minimal setting.

The sculptural wood pendant becomes the focal point of the double-height entry, its warm tone echoing the natural wood accents found throughout the home. It draws the eye upward and creates a sense of connection between the main floor and the upper landing. Beneath it, a carved wood sculpture in a complementary finish reinforces this harmony and adds an artful presence without overwhelming the clean lines of the architecture.

Together, the artwork, architectural panelling, and soft, neutral finishes create a look that feels bright, inviting, and thoughtfully layered.

5. Smart Solutions for Undefined Spaces

A custom built-in has the power to organize storage, seating, lighting, and display into one cohesive element, helping an open-concept home feel anchored from the start. In our Lions Bay Project, pictured below, the challenge was not the size of the space but the absence of a true front entry.

The home opened directly into the main living area, so we designed a built-in seating nook with integrated storage to create a clear sense of arrival. Wall sconces introduce soft lighting, while artwork anchors the vignette and helps shape a welcoming moment within the larger space. The result is an architectural feature that gives purpose to an otherwise undefined zone and feels completely at home in the surrounding design.

In our West Van Project, pictured below, the living room coffee table provides a simple but telling example.

Left bare, it would feel disconnected from its surroundings. Once layered with a woven tray, a few favourite books, a sculptural vase, and flowers from the garden, the table exudes warmth and personality. The result is a space that feels lived in rather than staged — seamlessly connected to the home’s coastal palette through the repetition of colour and natural materials.

The Art of Layering

While finishing touches may appear effortless, achieving that balance is never accidental. Styling a room requires a professional eye — one that understands proportion, rhythm, and restraint.

I always begin with a clean slate, removing everything to reveal the architecture and true proportions of the space. From there, we curate with intention, blending cherished pieces with new supporting elements to complete the composition. Styling shelves is one of the best ways to express this idea in practice — a true art form where balance, texture, and story meet. Take the built-ins from our Newfoundland Project, for example.

Initially (left), the shelves held a meaningful mix of family photos, keepsakes, and well-loved books. Our goal is never to erase what matters most, but to refine how it is presented. We edit, reintroduce, and layer to create balance and cohesion, adding sculptural ceramics, textured accents, and art books for rhythm and contrast.

The result (right) is a display that feels both personal and polished — a reflection of the homeowner’s story, expressed with structure and warmth.

Professional Tip: To keep the look functional (and avoid the tchotchke effect), we love incorporating accessories that also serve a purpose — woven baskets, storage boxes, or sculptural lighting.

Investing Where It Counts

Lastly, not every accessory needs to be a showpiece, yet certain finishing touches are worth the investment. Custom pillows, drapery, and lighting, for example, can instantly elevate a room. The difference in quality, proportion, and comfort is subtle but unmistakable. Additionally, original art and handmade objects infuse a home with authenticity and a connection to place.

A sculptural light installation by Vancouver’s Propellor Studio creates a striking focal point while maintaining a sense of airiness.

The custom oak table, designed by our studio and built by Brodye Chappell Builds, introduces natural warmth and craftsmanship. Nearby, a textural wall hanging by Newfoundland artist Mary Anne Donovan. These investments in craftsmanship, artistry, and authenticity elevate the home’s narrative while supporting Canadian makers.

At the same time, it is important to note that not every finishing touch requires a significant investment.

A vintage find, a plant in a timeless ceramic vase, or a curated stack of design books can add texture and warmth without excess. The thoughtful balance of refined objects can create that natural, collected and intentional aesthetic.

A well-chosen area rug does not simply enhance a space visually; it plays a pivotal role in how you feel in the room. From adding warmth and texture to defining zones in an open-concept layout, an area rug can make or break the flow of a design.

Here is how we approach area rugs within a home, and why the right choice can transform a space from the ground up:

Establishing the Design Direction 

As a designer, I often begin with flooring and floor coverings before moving into the rest of the scheme. An area rug frequently sets the direction, and I approach it in one of two ways. At times, the rug becomes the starting point, much like a work of art, with its colours and patterns inspiring the palette that follows.

In the Vancouver townhome pictured above, the lively area rug establishes the foundation for a playful mix of colour and pattern. The palette of the artwork and pillows draws directly from the tones within the rug, creating a layered and cohesive story from the ground up.

In other cases, a rug serves as a quiet backdrop. A solid or neutral texture allows another element—such as a piece of art or a statement fabric—to lead, while the rug supports the scheme with subtlety. Both approaches are successful when the rug is chosen with intention.

In our West Vancouver Project, the rug is deliberately understated. Its soft, neutral tone grounds the furniture while allowing architectural details—the textured fireplace surround and earth-toned accent colours—to take centre stage. Here, the rug creates cohesion without competing for attention.

The Power of Scale

Just as artwork is often hung too high, rugs are often chosen too small. A rug that is undersized for the surrounding space makes a room feel fragmented and unfinished, while a generously proportioned rug ties furniture together and visually expands the space.

In open-concept homes, rugs can also define zones, as shown in our Raven Woods Project pictured below. 

Here, we selected a patterned rug that extends fully beneath the sofa and chairs, anchoring the seating arrangement and reinforcing a sense of intimacy within a tall, open concept space.

In the Dollarton dining room (below), the area rug takes a different form. 

An oval rug was chosen to mirror the table’s shape, yet large enough to allow the chairs to remain comfortably on the rug even when pulled out. This creates both functionality and visual harmony, ensuring the dining area feels grounded and complete.

These examples highlight how the proper rug dimensions can transform a space, shifting it from feeling bare or disjointed to feeling cohesive and thoughtfully composed.

Craftsmanship and Material

The value of a rug comes down to material, origin, and method of construction. Hand-knotted rugs, often made from fine wool, represent generations of skill and can take months to produce. Their investment level reflects not only artistry but also durability, often allowing them to become heirlooms. Machine-made rugs, while more accessible, provide reliable performance and a wide range of styles.

In our West Vancouver Project (pictured below), a textured wool rug anchors the seating area. The natural fibre provides warmth and resilience, demonstrating how the right material creates both comfort and longevity in a family space.

Wool remains one of the most versatile fibres for rugs. It is durable, naturally resilient, and ages gracefully, provided it is protected from excessive moisture and prolonged direct sun. With proper care, a wool rug can last for generations, making it a wise choice for high-traffic areas or family homes.

Silk, by contrast, offers unmatched lustre. However, it is much more delicate, prone to fading, and better suited to quieter spaces where it will not endure heavy wear.

Natural fibres such as jute or sisal bring an appealing textural quality, yet they are not soft underfoot and are difficult to clean. In damp climates like Vancouver, they are particularly vulnerable to mildew and mold, which limits their practicality despite their visual appeal. 

Selecting the right fibre for your home ensures that an area rug is not only beautiful but also truly livable, supporting both comfort and the ease of your everyday life.

This artwork establishes the palette and mood for the surrounding design elements. Alongside it, the family’s antique dining table and sideboard bring a sense of history and continuity. Together, the art and furnishings illustrate how old and new can work together to create a home that feels both meaningful and fresh.

Step 2. Identify What’s Missing

Once we know which pieces will stay, we look at the room with fresh eyes to see what the space might still need. Is there an open wall that feels too bare? Does the room lack texture or variation in scale? Sometimes the answer is sourcing a new piece to balance proportions, other times it is about adding depth, colour, or material interest to complete the story of the space.

When we source new pieces, we always begin locally. We work with Vancouver-based galleries and Canadian makers to find art that aligns with our clients’ taste and the aesthetic of their home. This not only supports local artists and our economy, but also creates a sense of place that feels authentic.

In this West Vancouver coastal-inspired dining room (pictured above), a panoramic seascape painting balances the scale of a long wall and sets a serene colour story for the space. Its horizon line echoes the natural textures found in both the shiplap and subtle grasscloth wallpaper, while the placement grounds the space and brings the design together.

That same sense of calm extends just beyond the French doors into the adjoining home office…

Here, with smooth walls as the backdrop, a glimmering abstract painting by North Vancouver artist Donna Giraud introduces depth, dimension, and texture. Gold accents in the artwork are mirrored in the drapery and unify the room while enhancing its contemporary character.

Together, these two spaces show how thoughtfully selected pieces can both complete a room and create continuity across adjoining areas.

Step 3. Select Pieces That Work Together

Integrating new artwork with items you already own requires a balance of proportion, colour, and style. In some cases, this may involve updating frames to create cohesion. Other times, it’s as simple as introducing a unifying thread, such as a shared palette or a consistent frame colour across rooms. Tactile qualities matter just as much as visual ones. In our Larkhall Crescent Project, pictured above, grayscale botanical photographs by local artist Heather Johnston echo the organic nature of the woven wall hangings, while contrasting textures add interest. Black accents in both the frames and baskets tie everything together, striking a balance between simplicity and warmth.

Designer Tip: Galleries are often happy to bring pieces to your home so you can see them in context. Trust your instincts. If you love a piece and it works within your space, it is the right choice. Equally important, do not hesitate to say “no” if something does not feel right.

Step 4. Placement with Purpose

Artwork does not need to be reserved for the main living areas. We love incorporating art into every room of the home. A small painting in the powder room? Yes! Thoughtful placement can infuse personality and delight to even the most unexpected corners — from sculptures displayed in a hallway to paintings tucked in the walk-in closet. These touches create moments of joy in the spaces you pass through every day. Our PEI Project beautifully illustrates this idea.

From a jewel-box powder room with a locally inspired farm painting, to a colourful painting displayed in our clients’ incredible walk-in closet, to a mezzanine that proudly showcases collected glass and ceramics from their travels, this home uses art to reflect nature, beauty, and personal story at every turn.

Of course, practical considerations matter too. Works on paper or moisture-sensitive mediums are best kept out of high-humidity areas like bathrooms, while fragile ceramics and sculptures should be positioned safely out of reach of pets and children.

The second chapter of our Newfoundland renovation carries the same heart and thoughtfulness as the first.

In Part I, we shared how the transformation of this 1950s-era home reflected James and Margaret’s East Coast roots and West Coast experiences—honouring both tradition and simplicity. While the main floor introduced this coast-to-coast conversation, the upstairs and private areas allowed us to go deeper, building in warmth, function, and meaning at every turn.

These next spaces—each distinct in purpose—continue that narrative, illustrating how a home should feel both cohesive and collected, practical and polished.

Organized Mudroom & Laundry Area

Not to be overlooked, the mudroom and adjoining laundry are hard-working spaces within the home. From the start, we aimed to bring the same level of intention here as we did in the more prominent rooms.

Custom cabinetry in a muted sage finish provides ample storage while tying into the green tones carried throughout the main floor. Built-in seating and open shelving add function and flexibility, while the Roman shade above the bench brings a cheerful layer of colour and pattern.

Around the corner, the laundry area is equally efficient—outfitted with durable surfaces, integrated storage, and clean lines that support everyday ease.

Polished & Personal Home Office

A well-designed home office should offer more than utility—it should invite focus and a sense of calm. In this space, we prioritised all of the above, creating a tailored environment that supports the clients’ day-to-day work while still feeling connected to the rest of the home.

We started with custom built-ins in white oak that flow effortlessly with the new hardwood floors. Open shelving creates room for meaningful objects and collected pieces, while the lower cabinetry keeps everything tidy and contained. Brass picture lights illuminate the colourful artwork and elevate the millwork with a refined, gallery-like effect.

A beautiful white oak desk anchors the room, paired with a woven cane-back chair for a textural moment. Overhead, a bubble pendant light infuses a sense of levity and softness. Finished with contrasting black decorative objects, this office feels both personal and professional—a serene, creative corner designed for clarity and focus.

Two Bathrooms, Two Ways

Bathrooms often offer an opportunity to explore a different side of the home’s character, and these two spaces are no exception.

In the main-level powder room, whimsical floral wallpaper introduces a playful, feminine energy. A fluted wood vanity and brass fixtures root the design in classic craftsmanship, while crisp shiplap keeps the aesthetic feeling fresh.

Upstairs, the guest bath takes a bolder approach…

Here in the main bathroom—primarily used by James and Margaret’s son—geometric wallpaper and black shiplap make a confident statement. Matte black fixtures and a natural oak vanity complete the space, lending to an overall effect that is grounded and masculine—a bold counterpoint to the home’s softer moments.

Relaxed & Collected Primary Suite

Last but certainly not least: the space that started it all.

James and Margaret initially reached out to address a leaking shower in their ensuite, but that small issue became the catalyst for a complete reimagining of the upper level.

By combining two bedrooms overlooking the garden, we created a light-filled, connected retreat—with the option to revert to separate rooms in the future.

A double-sided fireplace—chosen to showcase James’s work in the fireplace industry—anchors the suite and gently divides the sleeping area from the adjoining sitting room. With subtle moulding and a clean profile, this architectural feature embodies East Coast tradition while honouring West Coast simplicity.

Custom built-ins in the sitting area, painted in a muted green, provide both storage and styling opportunities. A pair of velvet lounge chairs in a complementing hue form a quiet nook for reading or reflection. The nature-inspired palette, which picks up on the wood tones and colour story seen in the butler’s pantry, living room, and mudroom, continues to reinforce the home’s visual harmony.

With the new footprint, we had the freedom to design a spa-like ensuite that blends timeless appeal with daily livability. 

A spacious walk-in shower, freestanding soaking tub, and custom double vanity now define the room. Herringbone wood-look tile flooring creates movement underfoot, meanwhile, classic white cabinetry and oak-framed mirrors strike a balance between crisp and cozy.

Above the freestanding tub, a bubble-inspired pendant—nearly identical to the one in the home office—adds a touch of artistry. Its multi-tiered, glass-blown shape diffuses light beautifully, offering a soft moment of artistry in a room that favours clean lines and understated elegance.

The wallpaper, delicate in both tone and pattern, adds just enough texture to elevate the space without overwhelming it—reinforcing the suite’s sense of quiet luxury. Together, these thoughtful details achieve everything our clients’ envisioned and more.

Final Thoughts

From a leaky shower to a full-scale transformation, this renovation uncovered the hidden potential of a well-loved home. Throughout every decision, our aim was to blend East Coast charm with West Coast clarity, delivering a space that feels not just beautiful but deeply livable.

When James and Margaret (names changed) approached us about updating their 1950s-era Newfoundland home, their goal was clear: modernize their interiors while honouring both their experience of the West Coast in Vancouver and their current life on the East Coast.

Having recently completed our PEI project, I was uniquely positioned to help them bridge these two aesthetics. My shared understanding and experience of living on both coasts—coupled with a family connection (fun fact: my mother-in-law, a St. John’s-based designer, had worked on the original renovation of this home over 20 years ago)—made this project particularly meaningful.

Project Scope

What started as a straightforward repair—a leaking shower in the primary ensuite—quickly led to a broader reconfiguration of the second floor. From there, the project expanded into a full cosmetic renovation completed in two phases.

Phase 1 focused on the upper level, reworking the layout and fully furnishing the primary suite. In Phase 2, we turned our attention to the main floor, where we updated finishes, added extensive millwork, and reworked key spaces to better accommodate James and Margaret’s needs.

Although we typically take a more hands-on approach, working remotely and completing the project in phases required a more intentional strategy. With each decision, we remained focused on creating a home that felt cohesive, comfortable, and true to our clients’ vision.

Today, we begin the first of our two-part series unveiling the transformation.

Traditional East Coast Entryway

Upon entering the front door, you are met with a defined vestibule—a classic East Coast feature designed to buffer the rest of the home from Newfoundland’s often fierce winds and wet weather. This traditional element offers both function and form, creating a clear sense of arrival while helping to contain the elements.

Marble mosaic tile underfoot provides durability for snow-and rain-covered boots, while also adding richness and pattern. Overhead, a globe pendant casts a soft glow, and a vintage-inspired floral wallpaper brings a welcoming layer of charm that nods to tradition without feeling overly formal.

The white oak console table is the home’s first styled moment, setting a tone that feels thoughtful, warm, and refined. A rich rust coloured bench tucked beneath adds a layer of softness and practicality.

Incorporating James and Margaret’s art collection was central to the design of the entire home. Some pieces we used as a jumping-off point for colour and finish selections, while others were new additions—like a few West Coast artists I introduced that now round out their collection. The earthy hues in the winter landscape painting above the entry table sets the tone for what is to come.

Contemporary and Tailored Dining Room

This formal dining area reflects classic East Coast sensibilities, yet its furnishings lean into West Coast simplicity.

Surrounding the table, leather-upholstered dining chairs in a neutral beige tone infuse softness and comfort. Their gentle curves and sleek aesthetic blend timeless elegance with contemporary ease.

The most noteworthy feature? A snowy forest landscape painting, part of James and Margaret’s art collection. This evocative piece, with its gold-flecked detailing, evokes the glow of a winter sunset. Its subtle hues of orange echo the tones from the nearby entryway creating a sense of harmony between spaces.

As you move through to the kitchen, the mood begins to shift…

Painted in a mossy green and accented with copper fixtures, this small but mighty space radiates comfort and charm. Above, a tiled ceiling mimics the look of a traditional tin ceiling, drawing the eye upward and adding both dimension and nostalgia.

Equipped with a second sink and built-in wine fridge, this nook is as functional as it is beautiful—well-suited for both everyday use and entertaining.

Pristine and Organic Kitchen & Breakfast Nook

The kitchen embraces the streamlined West Coast aesthetic Margaret came to appreciate during her residency in Vancouver—natural materials, balanced contrast, and a strong connection between form and function. A generously sized walnut island anchors the space, its natural tone echoed in the wood trim of the custom vent hood.

White cabinetry serves as a clean backdrop, complemented by striking quartzite, which extends uninterrupted behind the range for a sleek, slab-like effect. We utilized decorative items to layer personality—ceramic vessels, wood boards, copper accents—and infuse the space with lived-in character.

Copper pendant lights above the island add a touch of industrial edge, their soft patina evolving beautifully over time. We sourced counter stools with woven seagrass backs and brass footrests to layer in texture in a way that feels both timeless and fresh. Together, these elements create a grounded yet inviting feeling—one that encourages gathering, conversation, and everyday ease.

Looking closer, you will notice the fluted walnut paneling under the island—an organic, tactile detail that pairs beautifully with the quartzite countertops. As I am sure you will notice, this interplay of warmth and refinement is a recurring theme we carried throughout the entire home.

Nestled in the corner of the kitchen, the breakfast nook feels like a deep exhale—casual and sunlit. Here, the West Coast influence becomes more evident…

A pedestal table with a slatted wood base provides a contemporary note, softened by upholstered chairs in a basket-weave fabric. Above, a woven seagrass pendant evokes a familiar coastal feeling—light, textural, and relaxed. This cozy nook is not only a calm spot for morning coffee or casual meals, but also maintains the perfect balance of style and comfort.

Comfortable Open-Concept Family Room

Beyond the kitchen, the family room continues the home’s warm, connected flow. Open-concept by design, this area allows easy movement and conversation between spaces.

Gentle vaulted ceilings contribute to the room’s open, inviting atmosphere, and we sourced furnishings that follow suit. Neutral sofas with clean silhouettes and a classic chandelier introduce simplicity. In contrast, walnut furnishings draw warmth from the kitchen and breakfast nook, reinforcing the home’s visual flow.

The Town and Country fireplace, hand-selected by James (a fireplace aficionado), is undoubtedly the focal point of the room. Framed in sculptural composite concrete, it creates a sense of permanence and artistry. It also serves a greater purpose—acting as the architectural heart of the main level. Visually calm and deeply livable, this is a space designed to be enjoyed everyday.

Classic & Contemplative Music Room

Last but not least, the music room—modest in size, but grand in presence.

The grand piano—sleek, striking, and reflective—makes an immediate impression, anchoring the room with poise. A neutral curved chaise lounge invites pause, and the addition of moody coastal artwork and filtered natural light reinforces the room’s tranquil, contemplative mood.

Herringbone patterned hardwood flooring lends movement and an additional layer of craftsmanship. A minimalist pendant light hangs overhead and introduces a touch of modernity.

Floral linen drapes soften the space, and custom wall mouldings frame the room with understated detail. Set apart but still fully connected, this is a space for rhythm, reflection, and retreat.

01. Dining Banquettes to Maximize Space 

In many homes, it can be challenging to unlock the potential of a small space. Thankfully, it’s in these areas where custom millwork takes centre stage. A well-designed banquette, for example, can transform a tight dining space into a functional and visually appealing nook. Not only does it provide additional seating, but it also maximizes every square inch.

In our Lions Bay Project (pictured left), the challenge was to creatively optimize space while honoring the home’s natural surroundings. The sinuous shape of this custom-designed banquette serves as both a functional seating area and a sculptural piece. This design solution not only addresses the spatial needs of the room but also adds a thoughtful, artistic element that deepens the connection between the interior and its environment.

Similarly, in our West Vancouver Renovation Project, we designed a custom built-in banquette that redefines the dining area. By installing narrow shelves on either side and repositioning the table slightly, we improved the room’s flow and accessibility, especially to the patio doors. This subtle yet impactful change optimized the space without sacrificing even a drop of functionality for our clients.

02. Wall Treatments for Dimension & Depth

Take a moment to look around your home—what brings it to life? Is it the art, the colours, or perhaps the architectural details? Most often, it is these subtle but significant elements—like wall treatments—that breathe life into a room, creating a sense of warmth and individuality. Without them, many spaces risk feeling dull and uninspired.

In our Kitsilano Cottage Project, pictured left, we reimagined a small, cramped living room by introducing custom built-ins on two full walls. These included a built-in banquette, a concealed TV unit, and a glass front display cabinet to enhance both functionality and aesthetics. This thoughtful application of millwork transforms the space into a practical and inviting environment for the entire family. 

Meanwhile, in our Lions Bay Project, pictured on the right, we introduced geometric wall mouldings that echoes the angles of the beams overhead. This treatment not only adds texture and visual interest but also creates a connection with the wood details in the shiplap ceiling, unifying the room’s design and the experience our clients have within it.

03. Built-in Benches for Tailored Living

One of the greatest advantages of custom millwork is its ability to be tailored specifically for your lifestyle and the needs of your home. Unlike off-the-shelf solutions, custom pieces can be crafted to fit any space, no matter how small or uniquely shaped. This personal touch enhances both functionality and design.

In our PEI Project, we designed several built-in benches throughout the home—each one serving a specific purpose:

These window benches do more than add cozy seating to the home; they were also designed with hidden storage, blending both utility and beauty. One of the benches even doubles as a waiting area for our client’s home-based business, proving that custom millwork can be as practical as it is elegant.

04. Custom Bookshelves as a Focal Point

Many homes today lack the architectural detail that brings a space to life. In fact, many are still relying on builder-grade finishes, basic trimwork, and plain doors that don’t do much to define a room. Built-in bookshelves can fill that gap, turning an ordinary space into one that feels thoughtful, intentional, and full of character.

In our recent Newfoundland project, custom-built shelving became the focal point of this cozy sitting area, setting the design direction for the entire room. The built-in bookshelf boasts an elegant arch detail along the top, a contrasting sage backdrop that draws attention, and ample storage below. This feature provides functional storage while creating a visually dynamic centrepiece, making the space a soft, inviting place for our clients to relax.

In our Kensington Family Home project, we designed double-sided built-ins to separate the dining and living rooms and add functional storage. The navy interiors on the dining room side complement the darker, dramatic walls, while the white interiors on the living room side brighten the space. The design enhances our clients’ ability to enjoy quiet moments or entertain delightful guests, in equal measure.

While we sometimes conduct our initial Design Discovery Session remotely, I always make it a priority to meet the contractor and take comprehensive measurements during an in-person visit to kick off the project — what we call “Trade Day.” 

Following this crucial first step, we schedule at least one additional site visit, typically during installation, to ensure everything is coming together beautifully as envisioned.

06. Complete Logistics Management

One aspect clients appreciate most about our remote design service is that we handle all logistics from start to finish. This means coordinating multiple vendors, tracking shipments across different timelines, and ensuring everything arrives at local warehouses for safekeeping until installation day.

Throughout this process, we maintain constant communication with vendors, warehouses, and delivery teams, tracking each item and troubleshooting any issues before they impact your project. This comprehensive logistics management ensures that no detail is overlooked, regardless of the miles between us.
