Most homeowners simply have a sense of what they feel comfortable investing or the funds they have available for their project. Part of my role is helping you understand what is realistically possible within that range.

During our Design Discovery Session, we can discuss how far different investment levels may go and explore options if the ideal scope exceeds the initial plan. Sometimes that means prioritizing certain areas first, phasing work over time, or adjusting selections while still protecting the overall vision for your home.

Images are one of the most effective ways to communicate design preferences. Before our meeting, I encourage clients to collect a handful of images showing spaces they are drawn to — whether this is through Pinterest, Houzz, magazine clippings, or saved images online. You do not need to worry about identifying your “style”. Instead, we help identify common threads in your images that can inform the path forward.

Perhaps you gravitate toward lighter palettes, layered textures, natural materials, or spaces that feel calm and uncluttered. Sometimes clients are surprised to see how consistent their preferences actually are once we review these images together. This exercise allows us to quickly identify the elements that resonate with you and begin shaping a design direction that feels authentic to your home.

5. Bring Your Questions and Biggest Challenges

The Design Discovery Session is designed to be highly interactive. Many clients arrive with a list of questions about renovation ideas, colour palettes, furniture placement, or design decisions they have been struggling with. Others simply want guidance on where to begin. Both approaches are equally welcome.

Iconic lavender fields, historic architecture, and the patina of time — these are the hallmarks of Provence.

Recently, I had the pleasure of visiting this enchanting region of France. As an area celebrated for its vibrant landscapes and distinctive colour palettes, it not only provides a feast for the eyes, but also a significant influence on the world of design.

The dynamic landscapes and architectural richness of Provence, so distinct from what we find in Canada, serve as a vivid reminder of the influence that nature, architecture, and the pace of life have on design. As I wandered through these visually rich regions, I was inspired by how these elements could be woven into the fabric of our living spaces, enhancing the way we live.

1. Craftsmanship is celebrated through intricate architecture.

The architectural details in Provence tell a story of craftsmanship and fine attention to detail. Historic features like detailed mouldings, gentle arches, and artful balconies adorn the streets. Intricate cornices, corbels, decorative friezes, and dentil mouldings capture the essence of authentic European artistry. Each element, from the aesthetically pleasing ironwork on balconies and windows to the creative door knockers, showcases the beauty found in minutiae.

2. Bold statements are utilized to attract attention.

Provence, and France in general, taught me that sometimes, to capture attention, you must embrace the extravagant. The storefronts decorated with flowers and foliage are perfect examples of how a little over-the-top can be just right. Inspired by this, I plan to bring a touch of this floral extravagance to our studio’s own entrance. This welcoming addition will serve as a lovely reminder of my time in Provence and a delightful entrance for clients.

3. Joy is found in everyday objects.

It is not always about attracting the gaze of passersby; often, it’s about drawing ourselves and our loved ones out of the monotony of our everyday routines to appreciate moments of joy and beauty.

In my own home, simple pleasures stem from a cherished piece of artwork, a beloved patterned pillow, or a beautifully crafted vase from my travels abroad. These pieces serve as a daily reminder to remain present and cherish and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us.

4. Imperfection can be beautiful.

In Provence, the patina created by time is embraced with grace. Unlike in North America, where we often seek perfection, Provence embraces the marks of time and history on its buildings. This approach was vividly illustrated during my visit to local artist Aurelie’s rustic attic studio, which, despite lacking modern conveniences, was brimming with undeniable charm.

5. Basking in slowness is soul-soothing.

One cultural observation that struck me was the unhurried lifestyle of the locals. It is rare to see a local rushing around with a cup of coffee in hand. Instead, the French prefer to savour their moments, whether it’s enjoying a meal or a cup of coffee at a café. There is no rush, no bill brought to the table without request — just the invitation to simply practice mindfulness, be present, linger, and enjoy as long as you wish.

As I reflect on these inspirations from Provence, I am reminded of the profound impact our surroundings have on our daily lives. Each element of Provence’s beauty has reinforced my commitment to designing spaces that aren’t just visually stunning but also rich in history, emotion, and personal meaning.

If your path has been anything like mine, you may have noticed that life does not always follow a straight line. Although design is exactly what I am meant to do, it took me a while to figure out that I was headed here. Of course, hindsight is 20/20, and when I really look, the seeds of design were always there, slumbering amidst the very fabric of my childhood…

Early 1980s: Merging Design with Entrepreneurship

Growing up in the 1970s and ‘80s, surrounded by East Coast charm, I had never heard of Interior Design, let alone considered it as a possible career path. My mother wove the first threads of design into my life. With an innate sense of style and a deep appreciation for fine furniture, she worked hard to curate the perfect home for us. 

In fact, I think my undying love of wallpaper started in my childhood bedroom, outfitted with Holly Hobby wallpaper in the colours of the ‘70s — avocado green, gold and orange. I was also deeply influenced by my father, a tenacious entrepreneur who worked hard to build his business, a small chain of gas stations. 

From simple beginnings in a one-bedroom house on a beautiful piece of land overlooking the city, to involving their then junior-high aged daughter (me) in selecting timeless finishes during a major renovation, my parents set the foundation for my love of interior design and entrepreneurship.

1990s: Early Influences & the Path to Design

Fast forward a decade — who doesn’t want to forget high school? — to my time at McGill University, where I began my studies in Psychology and English Literature. I wanted to remain in Montreal over the summer after my first year, and to convince my parents, I secured a position at Pier 1 Imports. 

To my surprise, my time at Pier 1 turned into more than just a way to pay the bills; it was an encouraging workplace that fostered creativity and growth. 

The day that I was asked to create the window displays at our flagship store on St. Catherine’s Street was a highlight. This was the first real, public display of my design abilities — thousands of pedestrians walked by those windows every day! It wasn’t long before I was promoted to merchandising manager, leading a team responsible for creating all of the in-store displays. 

2000: Difficult Lessons & Humble Beginnings

In 2000, I moved to Ottawa and started working at a family-owned furniture store specializing in beautifully crafted, made-in-Canada, Mission and Colonial style furniture. Despite how much I loved the store, my journey there lasted only three months. The reason? My ambition to become an interior designer was deemed incompatible with their vision. Fair enough.

This setback, however, became the catalyst for me chasing my dreams. In that brief period, I absorbed invaluable insights into quality furniture construction and I made important connections, including a designer who would become my first real mentor.

After being let go from my furniture sales job, I spent almost 2 years as a decorator at a local design firm. This was a true “trial by fire”. With no formal training, I had to learn the ropes quickly. It was a stressful and challenging time. A significant car accident on my way to a jobsite prompted my then-boyfriend (now husband) to encourage me to venture out on my own. 

In the year 2000, Simply Home Decorating was born. Externally, my Ottawa-based business appeared to be very successful, with frequent press coverage and plenty of referral business. Internally, and like many new business owners, I was working incredibly hard to please my clients for very little return. For the first year, to make ends meet while I built up my client base, I even accepted a part-time position at a locally owned kitchen supply store. 

This time reinforced that I was a creative person who loved what I was doing, but it also made me realize I still had much to learn about running a business. 

2007: Mentors & Moving Business to Vancouver

In 2007, I made the move to Vancouver when I was 7 months pregnant and utterly burned out. At that juncture, I seriously contemplated quitting, as I wasn’t sure that I had the energy to start over. Instead, I enrolled in a Business of Design seminar with Kimberly Seldon, a choice that would prove to be absolutely life-changing! 

Kimberly’s Business of Design program equipped me with the knowledge I lacked about running the business, managing client expectations, and taking responsibility for my mistakes. This marked the pivotal shift that finally moved my business forward. It is hard for me to believe that was nearly 20 years ago!

2024: Living By Life’s Biggest Lessons

Admitting that I didn’t know everything was a hurdle for me to overcome in the early days of my career. Fear of appearing inexperienced, coupled with what is now known as “imposter syndrome”, held me back from seeking help when I needed it most. This reluctance not only slowed down my learning but also led to considerable stress. In hindsight, I realize that I should have asked more questions and sought help sooner.

In the current stage of my career, I am comfortable acknowledging that I am not omniscient. Even with 20+ years of experience, each project teaches me something new — either about design, our local community, our team, or even myself. 

Now, rather than fear the unknown, I enjoy leveraging these opportunities to expand my knowledge, to enhance our designs, to refine our systems, and to elevate our clients’ overall experience working with us. 

I have come to realize that business and life, like design, is a continuous journey of growth and improvement. We iterate and edit until only our best remains.

Our North Vancouver design studio is where team meetings ignite fresh ideas, client presentations come to life, and innovation seamlessly meets the artistry of home design. In essence, our studio is the heartbeat of Simply Home Decorating.

While you probably expected these traits from a design studio, what might surprise you is that the office is connected to my own home. When faced with the uncertain fate of our former office building across the street, I knew I needed a more creative and long-term home for my business. My husband and I embarked on a major home renovation, adding on a legal suite that became SHD’s headquarters.

As with all of our design projects, every decision made while crafting this space was made intentionally. Now, our office not only reflects our brand values, but it provides our clients with a tangible experience of the quality, care, and craftsmanship they can expect from us.

As an aside, it was especially enjoyable for me to design these spaces because I had no constraints! There was no need to incorporate something my husband loves or navigate around our existing collection of artwork. Instead, I used my own inspiration to curate a personal space with an intentionally unobtrusive neutral canvas, fostering an environment conducive to creativity. I hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

Our Creative Work Area

Classic, timeless, and purposeful, our office was crafted with flexibility at its core. Our approach began with a thoughtful floor plan, considering both present and future needs. To the left, a custom built-in L-shaped corner desk with brass metal inlay detail maximizes space, serving as my primary working area and offering necessary storage for client project samples.

In the centre, a large white table with beautifully detailed legs, made by our friends at Once A Tree Furniture, creates an ideal neutral surface for viewing samples and crafting flatlays for client projects. On the right, additional custom built-ins provide essential storage space for our vast library of materials and samples. These are made accessible by the ash rolling ladder on raw brass hardware handcrafted by 1925 Workbench, a talented husband and wife team in Toronto.

Our Extensive Design Library

Our sample library — including fabric memos, paint swatches, and more — is beautifully organized to look nice and keep us efficient. The crowning jewel of this space is the custom-designed chandelier from Brothers Dressler. Hand-crafted with precision using reclaimed natural oak and irregular cut Swarovski crystals, it not only illuminates our office but also creates a subtle moving pattern as the light dances around.

Keeping one eye on the future and flexibility when designing this space, just in case my husband and I ever decide to sell our home, this area can effortlessly convert into a partitioned bedroom, transforming the space into a functional bachelor’s suite. 

The Design Studio Lounge

On the other side of the office, the lounge beckons, introducing a cozy element that elevates the space beyond the traditional office atmosphere. We extended the bright and timeless aesthetic into this area with neutral furnishings and classic millwork. 

The large sofa is yet another of my favourite features of our studio. Slipcovered for easy cleaning, it not only provides a comfortable spot for casual team meetings but also offers a space for reading, relaxing, or a change of scenery that fosters creativity. If I want some alone time on the weekends, this comfortable space, where I am surrounded by quality furnishings and artwork that I love, is the perfect place for me to hide away! 

A Luxurious Kitchenette

Just beyond the lounge area is the small but mighty kitchenette, a hidden gem within our studio. The design elements carry through the space from the light oak chandelier, to the luxury vinyl plank floors – practical for a space where no one takes off their shoes – to the brass accents, creating a cohesive aesthetic. Equipped with a sink, closed cabinets, open shelving, a fridge, microwave and coffee maker, it is a practical space crafted for both functionality and elegance.

Although fully capable and wired for a range, we have currently chosen not to install one. The pristine quartz countertops with warm grey veining extends as a backsplash and adds a sophisticated touch to this otherwise functional corner. To complete the kitchen area, there is a small penninsula that comfortably seats two — a perfect retreat for lunch breaks or a quick chat over coffee.

A Fully Equipped Bathroom

Adjacent to the kitchen, you will find the meticulously designed bathroom. Here, our commitment to quality extends to every corner. I have always believed that you can tell a lot about a business by their bathroom. It is a space everyone uses, so for us, it isn’t a place to skimp on the design.

This well-appointed 3-piece bathroom reflects the importance we place on detail. A patterned concrete tile floor, subtle script wallpaper and vintage Parisian watercolours create an ambiance of simple elegance. This space is complete with a large walk-in shower, brass fixtures, and a glamorous vintage Japanese pendant – a treasured thrifted find from Coast Consignment. These thoughtful touches infuse this fresh new bathroom with a sense of history and uniqueness. 

The result is a space where our team can feel comfortable and at ease, giving them space to balance focus and creativity in equal measure. Speaking of…

When it comes to designing your home, it is easy to fixate on the desired results. After all, that is why you started your project in the first place. However, as someone who has renovated and decorated homes for 20+ years, I can tell you… the journey is equally important.

A home renovation or large-scale decorating project does not happen overnight, and it certainly doesn’t happen alone. It requires time, strategy and creativity, cross-team coordination, fast problem-solving, and above all, patience.

If you are like most of our clients — who enjoy high-achieving careers, a bustling family life, and a love for travel — you won’t want to navigate this process yourself. 

This is where we, your design team, become an invaluable resource. We do so much more than “pick out colours” or select fabrics: we lead the planning, project management, and execution of your most authentic home. Let me show you how…

Phase 1: Discovery

Every project starts with an initial Discovery Call and, if we are a good match for each other, a Design Discovery Session in your home. These are opportunities for you to connect with our team, communicate your vision for your home and lifestyle, and discuss your desired aesthetic. (Tip: Bring inspirational images if you have them.) Together, we will identify your home’s potential and refine your project’s scope of work. 

Following our Design Discovery Session, we will create your custom Proposal and schedule a virtual or in-person meeting with you to review it, along with our contract and any questions you might have. Once you have signed the contract and secured our services via retainer, your project officially begins. 

Phase 2: Detailed Design

Phase 2 is all about conceptualizing, documenting, and planning every detail of your project, and it all starts with your action-packed Trade Day. Our team and trade partners (e.g. millwork specialist, electrician, etc.) gather at your property to collect important information and generate big conceptual ideas together. Our clients love this day!

Then, our team spends the next 6-12 weeks ideating and developing these conceptual ideas in our studio. We prepare drawings, design custom elements for your home, select materials and furnishings, and get cost estimates for all proposed goods and renovation work. 

Once we are finished, you are invited to your exciting Design Presentation, which includes a visual display of your interior design concepts, selections for furniture and finishes, and a breakdown of estimated costs. You will have the opportunity to share your feedback, request adjustments, and approve all details before implementation for full peace of mind.

Phase 3: Implementation

Once the design is approved, you can go back to your everyday life while our team manages every detail of bringing it to fruition. We procure the items we have sourced for you, which involves a meticulous process of ordering, tracking, receiving, inspecting, and storing all items with care. 

During the Implementation Phase, we will also schedule any cosmetic or structural renovation work included in the scope of your project. This could be as intensive as gutting the kitchen or as non-invasive as painting or installing custom millwork and wallpaper in a powder room. To do so, we will hand-select and coordinate the services of our community of trusted trades, all of whom are masters of their crafts. 

As part of our commitment to ensuring a pleasant and easy process for you, we will also share weekly reports to keep you informed of our progress, plans, and other important updates. Once we have completed all work and procured all items, we are ready for the next phase…

Phase 4: Installation & Reveal

Phase 4 is all about putting the final pieces of the puzzle together. We ask you to enjoy time off the premises while we install your furnishings, lighting, window coverings, art, and decor. Depending on the scope of your project, this process can take 1-3 days — and believe me, you will not want to spoil the surprise by peeking early!

When ready, we will invite you to join us for a complete walk-through, reveal, and celebration of your home. We will point out key features, compile a list of any outstanding items to resolve, and pop champagne — or sparkling cider — to toast this new and exciting chapter of your life. 

Once any outstanding items are resolved, your project officially comes to a close. We will apply your retainer to any final invoices and provide you a Project Package, which includes specifications for all materials or appliances, product care instructions, and other important information. Lastly, we say a BIG thank you with the hopes that you will stay in touch — we never say goodbye for good!

For most people, “homework” is a word loaded with meaning and memories. If you are like me, you probably remember the schooldays of your youth: the scent of a new textbook, freshly sharpened pencils, the clack of the calculator. More recently, your experience with homework might extend to helping your children with their assignments, albeit on very different devices.

Whether these experiences were enjoyable for you or not, they always had a purpose: learning. When I tell you that we assign design homework to our clients, the same is true. It is how we — and you — learn valuable information about what you desire most from your home so we can bring it to life. 

Fortunately, I think you will also find these “assignments” significantly more fun than anything academia has ever dished out! Here is what you can expect…

Design Homework: The Prep

Our Design Discovery Session is our first working meeting together, at which time we will discuss your goals, your style preferences, and your lifestyle. To make the most of our time together, we request that you thoughtfully consider these details in advance and share them with us. Yes, this is where the design homework comes in:

1. Complete our Lifestyle Questionnaire. We will ask you to complete our Lifestyle Questionnaire, which asks general questions about your home, your family background and your routines. Please be as honest and thorough as possible to give us a complete picture. 
2. Explore Your Style as a Family. We request that you peruse our portfolio as well as design websites, like Houzz and Pinterest, to get a feel for what appeals to you stylistically and functionally. All decision-makers should be involved in discussing opinions and preferences. It’s okay if you don’t agree on everything; we will work together to find a beautiful compromise.
3. Curate Inspiration Photos You Love. After reviewing the world of inspiration, we ask you to select 6-8 images that speak best to your likes and dislikes. Include specific notes on what appeals to you in each image and what does not. We will review your homework with you during your Design Discovery Session. At the risk of sounding like one of your past school teachers, it is important to have this important work completed prior to our meeting so we can provide you with personalized recommendations. 

That’s it. We will discuss your work together during our meeting and further define your style and needs. Best homework ever, right? 

Design Homework: Project Field Trips

As a child, field trips were almost as exciting as Snow Days. Was there anything better than a school-day spent outside of school? During the design process, we harness this same sense of excitement and discovery by offering you the option of taking design field trips, if desired. Here are some options:

Furniture Showrooms: After we present you with our design selections, you may want to see some of the items in person to judge their look and feel for yourself. If so, we advise a field trip to some of our preferred showrooms to “sit test” a piece and see why we love it. Not interested in making a trip? No problem — we have already seen and/or tested pieces ourselves and can fully vouch for our selections.

Appliance Specialist: If your project includes a kitchen renovation, we will always send you to meet with our appliance specialist. Together, you will review your specific needs and hear more about the appliances’ features and details. Once you have made your selections, we will ensure that your desired appliances integrate seamlessly into our design.

Art Gallery Tours: We love supporting artists and makers so we often incorporate original pieces that bring out our clients’ personalities and make their homes unique. While we’re happy to source art for you, we understand how personal of a choice art can be so if you want to be involved in the process, we can provide introductions to some of our favourite local artists, makers and galleries. Treat yourselves to a tour, let us know which pieces you love, and we’ll help you select the perfect piece(s) for your home.

Final Tips for a Successful Design Project

Early & Timely Communication: My best tip for successfully completing your design homework — and for a successful project, in general — is to involve all decision-makers from the start. Having constructive discussions together is essential to uncovering whether or not you are on the same page about your future home. 

Openness to Compromise: If you discover that you are not on the same page, that is okay. While we do not provide marriage counseling, we do have over 20 years of experience, including some personal. We know how to create compromise in a way that everyone gets something that makes them happy. This is one of the many advantages of hiring us.

Have Some Fun: With the busyness of life’s daily adventures, when will you tackle this homework? My advice is to put the kids to bed, grab a glass of wine or two, and spend some time together dreaming, discussing, and prioritizing your goals. Just like that feeling of arriving at school with completed homework, you will radiate confidence before, during, and after the design process.

Does this sound familiar? Your family room, which you have been using extensively as of late, is beginning to show signs of wear. That 10-year-old sofa started sinking ages ago and is now on its last legs. Your chairs aren’t quite big enough for your rapidly growing kids. Maybe you have realized the layout isn’t functional or the colour palette feels tired and dated.

If any of this sounds familiar, you are one of the hundreds of thousands (maybe even millions) of people who have become dissatisfied with their home in the last few years. And so many of you have decided that now is the time to do something about it. 

As we all know, when demand goes up, so do prices and wait times. Under normal circumstances, suppliers gear up to meet the increased demand. However, in these unprecedented times, it is not that simple… which brings us to the new normal… higher prices and painfully long delays.

Whether you have started a project and are (still) waiting for goods to arrive or you haven’t started a project yet, today I’m sharing an inside look at how the supply chain has been affected by the pandemic and other events, what you can expect, and how we can help you deal with this frustrating situation.

What’s Happening at Each of the 3 Stages of the Supply Chain

First, let’s look at what’s happening behind the scenes at each of the 3 stages of the supply chain: resources, production, and transportation.

1. High demand has caused material shortages.

What happens when households all over North America (and beyond) all want the same things? You have increased competition for a finite amount of resources. Because of this, we’re seeing industry-wide shortages for materials like lumber, foam, fabric, and metal, all of which are used to make home furnishings. 

2. A whole host of factors have slowed production.

In addition to having a decreased supply of materials to work with, we’re seeing an unavoidable bottleneck at the production facilities themselves. Pandemic protocols (for social distancing, testing, and decreased overall capacity) have resulted in staff reductions. For facilities that are back up to full capacity, there is also a shortage of skilled labour to fill the increased demand. It’s not surprising that the combination of reduced capacity, a skilled labour shortage, an extreme increase in the volume of orders, and fewer materials has resulted in massive production delays.

3. Transportation issues have slowed the movement of materials and goods.

At the tail end of the supply chain, we have the transportation industry, and they are feeling the strain, too. Ports are so backed up that many carriers float on the ocean for days, sometimes weeks, unable to dock and unload their goods. This also means that the shipping containers are tied up and can’t be reloaded right away. In addition to not being able to unload their hauls in a timely manner, truck drivers are also in short supply. And now, with the recent flooding and damage to our highway infrastructure, Vancouver’s lower mainland is temporarily cut off from the rest of Canada. 

I know, it sounds like a lot of doom and gloom. But on the bright side… we are here to help you navigate these challenges.

How We Navigate these Challenges for You

Considering all of these supply chain issues, it seems like a miracle that any of our clients’ furnishings are being delivered at all! I can assure you that they are. We have successfully completed several projects over the course of the pandemic and there’s a good reason why…

1. Insider knowledge helps us make smart decisions.

While I’m unable to speed up the supply chain, knowledge is power. We constantly stay informed on changing lead times, and we have direct access to the production facilities themselves through our trusted vendors. This means that we can strategically select materials and items for your project, favouring those that are most likely to arrive in a timely manner.

2. Long-term relationships mean more access to information.

I am passionate about building relationships, especially with our clients, vendors, and industry partners. In times like these, our long-term commitment to our suppliers and vendors means they know that when things return to normal we’ll still be there supporting their businesses, so they go out of their way to help us — and by extension, to help you. As such, we are the “first to know” when there are delays or other issues, and that helps us keep you informed. 

3. We take on the stress and management for you.

The last two years have taught us that situations can and will change rapidly. Dealing with these constant changes requires patience, stress management, calm decision-making, and the ability to adapt. When you trust us to manage your project, you don’t have to weather these stressful situations yourself. We do it for you. If we need to reselect an item or change course, we will guide you to a solution. When the inevitable problems arise, we deal with them strategically and efficiently, while keeping you informed. You are in good hands.

4. We have altered our process to suit the “new normal”.

Adaptability is key in these challenging times and, as a small owner-run company, we can pivot quickly to improve our project outcomes and client experience. In order to mitigate the downtime for our clients during a renovation project, we have altered our process to account for longer or unpredictable lead times. 

While we used to place orders 2 to 3 weeks prior to demolition, we now order all materials and products in advance and work to establish firm lead times before scheduling your project start date. This may delay the start of your project; however, it helps minimize any downtime spent waiting for necessary materials and keeps your project moving. After all, how frustrating is it to watch your kitchen sit empty for weeks, not knowing when the cabinets or countertop will arrive, the take-out containers continuing to pile up? 

Don’t get me wrong, this by no means eliminates supply chain issues. It is just one more thing we can do to reduce your discomfort and improve your overall experience.

5. There is no “if”.

Our greatest value lies in the fact that you will have the most qualified experts possible overseeing your project from start to finish. There is no question of “if” we’ll deliver exceptional results. We will unequivocally do so, all the while providing exceptional customer service. Knowing that we always reach the desired destination is why our clients come to us under normal circumstances. These days that is truer than ever!

To do so, I’ve fine-tuned our creative and project management process over my 20+ years as an interior designer. Our Signature Design Service is a 4-phase process that is airtight, includes open and honest communication, and has a high level of coordination and precision (on our side) built right into it.

Today, I want to show you inside our interior design process so you can see what your design journey would look like. Yes, we use this process for every type of project we work on, but you can be sure, even if the “stops” are the same on your journey… the juicy details and exciting destination will be all yours.

As a voracious reader, I couldn’t resist the novel metaphor. 😉

Phase 1: Discovery

Every project starts with a complimentary Discovery Call, where we will find out more about you and your project. We’ll also share a bit about us, and determine whether our services are a good fit for you. 

If we both agree that the match is right, your Design Discovery Session will be next. This 2-hour, jam-packed meeting takes place in your home. We’ll discuss your goals for your project, devise solutions, gather the necessary information, and develop a complete scope of work. We’ll also discuss preliminary budget numbers where possible and outline a clear and direct path forward.

Following our meeting, we will schedule a virtual or in-person meeting with you to review the design contract, our proposal, and answer any questions. Once you have signed the contract and submitted your retainer, your project begins!

Part of our Design Discovery process may include looking at your favourite inspirational images to get a feel for your style, wants, and needs.

Phase 2: Design & Sourcing

Now we get to the fun and creative part… developing your project’s design concept. 

To start, we’ll meet on-site again and bring our valued trade partners along, too. Together, we’ll gather the additional information we need to generate design concepts and estimates for your project. 

Once we have everything, we’ll return to our studio to develop design concepts, prepare all necessary drawings, select, coordinate and source materials and furnishings — or design custom elements for your space. At the same time, we will obtain cost estimates for all proposed goods and for renovation work where applicable. 

Note: Creating a design concept probably sounded quick and easy when you read it in that short paragraph above, but this step is highly labour-intensive. This step of the interior design process can last between 4 to 12 weeks depending on the size of your project. Believe me, this time is necessary and the results will be well worth the wait.

Last but not least, we will unveil our final design concept to you during our Design Presentation. (Our clients love this part!) You’ll see drawings, furniture selections and furnishes, along with cost estimates. We’ll adjust the design, if needed, based on your feedback and finalize all details before we arrive at the next step… implementation.

Custom drapery is just one example of the personalized selections that may be included in your design concepts. 

Phase 3: Procurement & Project Management

Your design concept is in place… we have the green light from you to proceed… now, it’s time to get to work! 

During this phase of the interior design process, we place orders for furnishings and decor with our vendors and suppliers. We follow up regularly to keep the project on track, receive and inspect goods, and catch deficiencies early where possible. All while keeping you abreast of progress and new developments. 

If your space requires renovation, the work will be scheduled in accordance with your schedule, our project schedule, and our trades’ availability. We oversee the completion of all construction before moving to the next phase.

Accessories are the final layer that make your house feel like home.

Phase 4: Installation & Project Completion

Installation is generally scheduled 12-14 weeks after order placement and lasts 1-3 days depending on your project’s size. Here’s how it works…

First, we schedule the installations of any custom millwork and closets, electronics, wallpaper and window coverings. This is all done prior to the delivery of furniture and accessories, so your goods stay safely out of harm’s way. 

Once the moment has come for the final deliveries to arrive, we ask you to vacate the premises while we work our magic, installing furniture, creating the room layout, and styling. Then, you will receive the final call from us to come home…

…and you get to walk in and experience a true project reveal! *Insert tears of joy!*

Of course, we never wrap-up a project until we are confident you’re satisfied. We will walk through the finished home together, compile a list of any outstanding items, and resolve these items as efficiently as possible. We’ll also apply your retainer to any final invoices and present you with a balance invoice or refund where applicable. If your project is selected for a photoshoot, we’ll also discuss making those arrangements. 

Then we’re done. With all the loose ends neatly wrapped up, we’ll present you with your project package (material care instructions, colour swatches, product details, etc.) and our sincerest thanks for your patience and perseverance during this often long but oh-so-rewarding process. 

Now it’s time to celebrate and enjoy your “new” home!

From developing a relationship with your interior designer to crafting a home that brings ease to your daily life, the design process is an interactive one worth doing right. When clients come to us, they often share this sentiment. But what do most of our first-time clients not know?

How long an interior design project takes. 

A design project has hundreds of moving parts that impact your overall timeline. Just because your project has been on your mind for a long time doesn’t mean that it can (or should) happen overnight.

Besides, these large-scale, high-quality decorating and home improvement projects are ones that will enhance your life for the next 10-25 years. Taking the necessary time to properly plan and execute the project is key to achieving results that bring you joy and everyday luxury long into the future.

Today, I’m going to share some insight into what you can expect and how to judge the potential length of your project. But first… let’s talk about some terms you are likely to hear when discussing a project with your designer.

Interior Design Terms & Concepts to Know

Project Scope

“Project scope” is an outline of the exact work to be completed in each space. The larger the project, the more prep work you’ll need, the more furnishings and finishes you’ll have to source and the greater number of trades you’ll require. All of these details impact your project timeline.

Permits

Any renovation project (which simply means anything more than decorating), will likely require city permits… which again, take time, as you have to rely on the availability of the city clerks and other governing boards to issue them.

Working with us on a design plan before you start construction, or even before you consider hiring a contractor, is essential to getting the final result you imagine. Once the construction is done, we’ll bring in the right furniture and accessories to complete the project — where you really see the complete transformation!

Lead Times

When it comes to products, “Lead time” is the amount of time it takes for materials, finishes, and furnishings that we designate for your project to be manufactured and delivered. If the materials we select are all in stock and ready to ship, your lead time is less… if products are backordered, the lead time is longer. Anything custom made naturally has longer lead times.

The upside of bringing us into your project early is that we order the materials, finishes and furnishings, especially custom ones, prior to your construction phase (if you have one). We plan the delivery of shipments to coincide with your installation phase once the construction phase is complete.

Schedules

When I say “schedules,” I mean your schedule, our schedule and our trades’ schedules. If you have ever watched a renovation show on TV, you may expect your project to be complete in just a few weeks… but I have to be straight with you, my team and I, we can’t work 7 days a week 😉 We work regular business hours, as do our contractors and suppliers.

To create your project timeline, we have to look at everyone’s schedule and map out the phases in a way that works for everyone. Of course, this takes a bit of time and a lot of coordinating, but is well worth it for the finished product — a home that feels like you.

Your Role

Believe it or not, you have an equally important role in keeping your project on schedule. Timely decisions, invoice payments, and smooth communication all impact how quickly your project gets done.

Phases of a Design Project

Even for design professionals who have been in business for many years, calculating an accurate project timeline is nearly impossible without knowing the project’s scope. That said, we do have some general estimates based on our many years of experience.

The best way to judge your timeline is to look at each phase individually…

I. Design Phase

We usually schedule your project kick off 2-3 months before the projected construction start date. This gives us 6-12 weeks for the design and planning process which includes a week for revisions.

II. Procurement & Project Management Phase

This phase has the most variation by scope. First, we assess whether permits are required. If so, the timeline will vary greatly depending on the scope of the project and whether we are working within established norms or asking for a variance of some kind. It also depends on how backlogged the permit office is at the time of submission.

We then create a renovation work timeline based on the scope of the project. Basic cosmetic renovations can take 2-4 months to complete. Larger scale renovations can take upwards of 6 months. Again, this number largely depends on scope and what you are actually doing in your space.

For furniture and finishes, we expect 3-18 weeks of lead time (key term!) from the order date. If you are furnishing an entire home or have several custom-designed pieces, this time frame may increase. While procurement and project management overlap in the interest of efficiency, we always make sure that the lead time for construction materials coincides with when the trades will need them on site.

III. Installation Phase

Once construction is complete, we’re ready to install the furnishings and accessories we’ve purchased for you. We typically schedule 1-3 days for the installation of furnishings, depending on the size of the project.

Doing the Math to Calculate Your Project Timeline

If you added up the low and high time estimates for each phase, you’ll see that there is a LOT of variation from one project to the next. If you do the math based on your project scope, this should give you an idea of  a general timeline for your project – then add a buffer of ⅓ more time and that will probably be about right.

Here are a few examples of timelines — from the day you sign on to work with us to completion — for a few different types of projects:

• Furnishing a single room with no renovation component: 6 months
• Main floor project including some basic cosmetic renovations, like painting, a fireplace upgrade, flooring, trimwork, etc. but with no kitchens or bathrooms: 7-9 months
• A full renovation from planning to completion will require a minimum of 8 months

(So if you want a full home renovation complete by Christmas… get on your interior designer’s calendar in January!)

When to Start Your Design Project

In general, if you know roughly how long your design project will take, and when you would like it to be complete, you can calculate backward to discern the best time to start assembling your design team. Keep in mind that we often have a full project calendar and will not likely be able to schedule the design phase of your project for 1 to 3 months from the time you contact us.

When asked, I always recommend January as a great time to start a design project. Not only is everyone feeling refreshed from time off during the holidays, but schedules tend to be lighter at the beginning of the new year, as well.

And keep in mind, if you hope to have your home completed by the holidays next year, a spring start is absolutely necessary… especially if there is a renovation component. Anything begun mid-summer or later will most likely not be ready to enjoy by that holiday season. These things simply can’t be rushed!
